A Fun Read to Finish the Series

"To Marry for Duty" is the third book of the three book series titled "The Husband Fund." My review of the first book of the series, "To Catch a Groom," gives a detailed explanation of the concept of The Husband Fund series. I recommend reading "To Catch a Groom" and "To Win His Heart" before reading this novel; however, it is not a necessity. The husband fund was a legacy established by the parents of triplets to provide funds for each of them to find a husband. The first novel of the series is the story of Greer Duchess, the second novel is the story of Olivia Duchess, and this third novel is the story of Piper Duchess.

As the story opens we find that the protagonists, Nicolas (Nic) de Pastrana and Piper Duchess, are already very much in love with each other. The problem is that neither of them is aware of the other's true feelings. Nic has been in official mourning for his former fiancée who had been killed in a tram accident. Although he had met Piper and fallen head over heels for her, the mourning rules prevented him from approaching Piper. Piper ignorantly made an advance toward Nic and he was forced to reject her. She was deeply hurt so she retuned to New York and threw herself into her business.

When Nic's mourning period came to an end he goes to New York and meets with Piper. Throughout this series a sub-plot of jewelry theft has been woven. In this novel we find that murder is also involved. The investigation has come to a critical point and Nic decides to use this as a pretext to win Piper' heart. He has learned that Piper's two sisters could be in danger if the thief/murder is not apprehended as soon as possible so he is able to convince Piper to enter into a marriage of convenience as part of the plan to capture the murder. When Nic and Piper return to Italy sparks fly between Nic and his father to the extent that his father threatens to renounce Nic as his son unless the marriage is annulled.

Like with the other two novels in this series, Ms. Winters has crafted principled characters with great depth and high moral standards. The story has many twists and turns with a lot of surprises to keep the pages turning. Five stars for this offering.

The Husband Fund - Book #3

4 Stars! ~ This is the final instalment of the Husband Fund trilogy, it was a lovely romance and wrapped up the mystery of the stolen gems very nicely. Our middle sister, Piper, finally gets her heart's desire though Nic really puts her through hoops. It was nice having recaps on the other sister's. I enjoyed this story and the trilogy very much.

Husband Fund Series

This is a series of 3 books... I've written my review under the first book, To Catch a Groom. This series is absolutely the best! You'll be missing something if you don't read all three books, preferably in order, but it doesn't matter if you read the last first. Some of the most original stories I've ever read in this genre.

After an Indian attack, the three are left with no adult support, scant supplies, no transportation, and a cow in tow to journey along the dangerous Shawnee side of the Ohio to the safety of the Marietta settlement. Readers will recognize the breathless pace they've loved in action movies, defined by the eruption of a new crisis on the heels of each crisis resolution, as the siblings struggle against the odds: scavenging food; stealing fire from the Indians; whittling tools for catching supper; rescuing a young Shawnee from drowning; and treating wounds with chickweed and birch leaves. The author's sturdy plot advances distinctly and chronologically, resulting in pure suspense. She keeps her vocabulary action-oriented and her dialogue straightforward. A bracing work of historical fiction makes an unfriendly place of the Ohio riverfront as three children fight for their lives. In May 1793 the motherless Dunn family--Papa, Amos, Clara, and Jonathan--have almost completed their long trek from eastern Pennsylvania to the place where they hope to make a new life, the Ohio frontier. Amos, 13, is particularly anxious to start over; his memory of a terrible event and his subsequent guilt can be assuaged only in a new place. When the riverboat that is to carry the family to Marietta is ambushed by Indians, a terrible battle ensues, and in the confusion, the boat goes adrift, carrying the Dunn children down river. A second Indian attack causes them to abandon the boat and they land on the north shore of the Ohio River. Their only course is to walk to Marietta, following the river. Along the way, Amos spots a boy clinging to a floating log, and rescues him. He is an Indian boy, barely alive from a gunshot wound, and the children start to nurse him back to health. Still ahead for them: They are taken prisoner by a band of Shawnee, and need to reach Marietta, hoping to see their father again. The purchase was a complete waste of money. The book is missing the entire center. The first few chapters are repeated in the middle of the book. The teacher friend I bought if for, threw it away.

A very worthwhile read about some pretty sturdy young pioneers

My 8 year old son and I really enjoyed "Danger Along the Ohio." The strong-willed and self-reliant characters are very appealing. The language is well-crafted - descriptive, but not too difficult. This setting is late-18th century.

During the 20 years leading up to the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, Indians commonly attacked settlers coming down the Ohio in a futile attempt to prevent the settlement of their traditional hunting lands to the south and their homelands to the north. It was the era of Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, Tecumseh and a host of other storied frontiersmen and women, and Patricia Willis' characters fit right in.

The story revolves around Amos' attempts to befriend the Indian boy he rescues from drowning. Young readers will certainly identify with his awkward and frustrating attempts to win the friendship of his enemy. It is persistence that pays off in the end.

My only criticism is that Ms. Willis reflexively adopts the modern narrative of the sympathetic native and comes off a bit antagonistic toward the settlers. The Indians are vulnerable and human, while the scouts who rescue the children are gruff, forceful, and violent. To be sure, this kind of novel is not the place to depict the realities of savagery committed on both sides of the state of war that existed between these peoples. But Amos would have never been treated with such forbearance. Had Ms Willis managed to successfully bring a more realistic tension to bear on their relationship, with the same result, I would have given it 5 stars.

Still, a very good book about an American era that kids just don't know enough about.

A book recommended for Embedded Programming

Roger Ye has generally done a good job writing this book.

The book deals with constructing an Android system from scratch. Not having a lot of experience in embedded developing but as a Software developer, I found many useful things I did not know about the process, and how Android internally deals with daily problematics (such memory mapping or exception handling). In that sense, Android developers can certainly benefit from the book, even if they are not doing Embedded Programming.

Although some parts are more dense than others, there is generally a good initial job of explaining some concepts that might be oxidized for developers, such as memory management. Building a custom CyanogenMod is a good closure for the book to see a practical example of what you can do, rather than only theoretical information.

Some minor cons: some overuse of source code (is better to showcase a small section and point out to the repository with all the code) and based the development on a environment such as Eclipse - although I am not an expert in which alternatives are available. I can generally recommend this book for anybody interested in learning Embedded Programming.

I've been waiting for this book for years!

Android is a nearly perfect system to use for small hardware projects. Whether you are a Maker, building a project for Single-board computer or an entrepeneur with a product for the burgeoning IoC market, there couldn't be a better OS than Android. Unfortunately, until now, there has been only one book for developers looking to embed Android on a new device, Karim Yaghmour's excellent "Embedded Android".
Roger Ye's "Embedded Programming with Android" is the perfect prequil. It addresses an incredibly difficult topic: bootstrapping new hardware. The book manages to divide the subject -- intrinsically specific to the particular target tool-chain and hardware -- into several manageable and generalizable steps. The hands-on exercises make clever use of Android's QEMU emulator and lay out the process of taking hardware from bare metal, to running bootloader.
Make no mistake, bringing up new hardware is not for the faint of heart. This is not a beginner's book. Even an experienced developer with some experience programming close to hardware will have to use some ingenuity to work through the exercises. Working through them, however is a huge step towards porting Android to your own board.

A must read for the computer engineer interested in getting started with embedded development

If you want to get into embedded development this is a primer. It assumes that you have a some knowledge of computer architecture, assembly, C, and gnu tool chain experience. In the beginning the author walks you through all the tools he will be using, and a brief explanation of why he uses those tools. There isn't much in the way of walking you through installation and configuration of the development tools. But if you need that there is always plenty of information on the internet.

Sometimes it is hard just to know where to start when you want to get into a new field. This book answers it.
