The Dreaded Question It was the end of the day---and the end of a week of inspiring youth ministry seminars. We were a cheerful group of about a dozen youth workers, comfortably seated around the dinner table, all of differing ages, regions, denominations...and church sizes. Our conversation began innocently enough, sparked by what we'd heard from seminar leaders earlier in the day. But then one of the large church youth workers asked the dreaded question: 'So...how big is your youth ministry?' The large church youth workers responded immediately and with great enthusiasm, listing their expansive, active memberships, noting their state-of-the-art ministry resources, and sharing their awesome visions and strategies for additional growth. Feeling woefully inadequate, we small church youth workers grew increasingly quiet. Our confidence and cheerfulness evaporated. Later in the evening, a few of us vented in the hotel lounge (actually we were completely exasperated!). After some reflection, we noted a number of ways that our churches differed from large churches--- mainly in areas related to environment, expectations, and goals. And it became clear to our group: We need something different, because we are different! Not incompetent---just different. In other words, small church youth workers need a specialized approach to youth ministry. Location,Location, Location Why are there so many small churches? It's important to keep in mind that a huge percentage of small churches couldn't be anything but small. Why? Because there aren't enough people living around them! In vast stretches of our country, there simply isn't the population density for large churches---or the numbers to allow for huge youth ministry programs. Why does church location affect my ministry? There are small churches everywhere, from the big city to the farmland. Their geographies directly affect their special cultures and needs---their particular personalities, values, and traditions. So...everything from cultural and ethnic issues to transportation and travel can (and will) The midwestern city of Columbus, Ohio, has almost 660,000 residents; the entire state of Wyoming has fewer than 500,000 residents. have an enormous impact on how youth workers in small churches develop their programs. But before you begin ministry at your small church, you should be aware of some location-specific issues for churches in urban, inner-ring, suburban, small-town, and rural locations. Urban Locations Youth workers in small, urban churches face a number of issues that other small churches don't face. Be prepared for the following: 1. Limited finances---even less cash than the average small church. 2. Safety---crime and dangerous areas might affect meeting times, locations, and frequency. 3. Multi-ethnicity---not just African Americans and Latinos, but also Europeans, Southeast Asians, Russians...in short, every nationality! 4. Acute family problems---young single mothers, absentee fathers, and often grandparents and other family members as guardians. 5. Limited mobility---public transportation might be students' only way to youth group activities. 6. Significant poverty---many single mothers struggle to provide, and fathers might be out of work. 7. Poor health---often families can't afford medical assistance. 8. Violence---for inner-city kids, it's a daily concern, and they may be afraid to attend youth group events because of it. (Between 7 and 9 p.m. in the summer can be the most dangerous time to hold youth group meetings in the inner-city.) 9. Fear of teenagers---older people in the community might suspect their young neighbors are 'always up to no good.' 10. Dilapidated buildings, limited space and out-of-date facilities---the church sanctuary might be the only decent meeting room available to you. 11. High student turnover---youth group kids may not stick around because of their parents' employment situations or other family problems. If you plan to do youth ministry in a small, urban church, these sorts of issues must factor into the way you structure your programs. Kids in inner-city churches are aware of these issues, and if they and the congregation realize you're aware, too, you'll eliminate at least one hurdle. Inner-Ring Locations The 'inner ring' is positioned between suburban and urban areas and is often made up of older neighborhoods. The churches here are usually older, too. Often these churches grow slowly and don't attract new families. It's not uncommon for them to have a mix of blue- and white-collar workers. Generally, youth workers in small, inner-ring churches will face these issues: 1. Competition from larger churches with aggressive outreach programs---in small areas, the word about good programs gets around pretty quick! 2. Transportation problems---rush-hour traffic and bad weather can dissuade students who have to travel more than 20 minutes to youth group events. 'In urban churches, you might have to deal with gang-related issues. If you don't have experience dealing with gangs, don't attempt it without help from very experienced people. (And even if you do have expertise---seek help anyway!) There are ministries established specifically to deal with gang members. 'Try starting youth group meetings at 7 or 7:30 on weeknights to avoid traffic tie-ups. Consider an after-school program if you live near a school. 'Obtain athletic and activity schedules from school districts rep-resented in your youth group. Plan all activities well in advance, balancing them between school calendars, your church's schedule, and ministry opportunities.' 3. School and neighborhood loyalty---kids from rival schools and areas may not want to hang out with your kids (this can apply to adults, too!). 4. Financial difficulties---inner-ring families on fixed incomes usually don't have a lot of discretionary cash. 5. Denominational loyalty---adults in various congregations, particulary those in leadership, are often dedicated to carrying on their families' denominational traditions...and are suspicious of others. Suburban Locations Of all the small churches, suburban congregations tend to have the easiest access to materials and leadership. In addition, the members of these churches are typically young, white-collar workers who are educated and business-minded. Youth workers in small suburban churches should be prepared for the following issues: 1. Turnover in student population---parents often move because of transfers and promotions. 2. Education---parents expect their kids to go to college, and most kids expect the same. 3. Mobility of students---they or their friends typically own cars. 4. Social sophistication---students are concerned about their social status and are introduced to social events early.

More of a jab at small churches, approaches won't work.
By A Customer
I was really disappointed. The author is obviously qualified, but it is interesting that he has been involved in so many denomonations (7) in his own youth ministry. I sense that he has had bad experiences with small churches and has unresolved issues. There are many jabs at them throughout the first half of the book. The last parts of the book consist of "approaches" that will not work in small churches for reasons given in the first half of the book. One of the three main approaches requires that youth be divided into groups of 6 to 8 with similar interests and of the same sex. Another requires a cast of leaders with very specific roles and qualifications. A much better book is "Youth Ministry in Small Churches" by Rick Chromey. It is a very positive book written with the small church in mind, and with some ideas that are really geared toward a church with only two to a dozen or so high-schoolers.

Small Church Youth Worker? Read This Book!
By Rich Noble
Speaking as a youth ministry veteran of a little more than 12 years, mostly in a small church setting in positions ranging from volunteer to full-time paid, I strongly suggest that youth workers (and pastors) read this excellent introduction to youth ministry in the small congregation. Grassel has a passion for small church ministry (along with many years experience)and has finally given us a book that speaks to that context from within that context. Even those who work within larger settings (which are really a minority in this nation) will learn a lot as they strive to work in partnership with other youth leaders.

This is by no means an exhaustive work, but it provides an excellent framework with a lot of helpful ideas for those of us striving to simply be faithful examples for and teachers of teenagers - people who are not concerned with numbers as much as they are about simply being Jesus to a generation.

Creepy Canadian Chiller
By Amazon Customer
I don't read a lot of Canadian authors. Not because I have anything against them of course, it's just that I rarely seem to come across them on my bookish travels. The last book I read that was actually set in Canada, prior to this one, was probably Moonheart or another title by Charles DeLint. I mention this because the Canadian setting in this book is very noticeable due to the constant references to Ice Hockey. The Guardians of the title for example, are primarily, the hockey team for which the key characters played as young men. That Canadian identity is really the first thing that struck me about this book, and it contributes to a strong sense of place which I really liked.

The story is told in the first person, from the perspective of one character in two different time periods. One is naturally enough, the present, and the other is revealed in extracts from the same character's journal, providing an unreliable narrative of events that happened in 1984. In the present the main character, Trevor, has learned that one of his best friends from childhood has taken his own life. Trevor has been appointed as executor of the will, and must travel back to the small town of Grimshaw where he grew up, in order to attend the funeral and carry out his late friend's final wishes. Which means going back to confront a past he had long hoped was behind him. It's not just the emotional difficulty of confronting the past that Trevor must deal with either, in the present he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, and is already suffering from diminished mobility and other effects of the condition.

As boys, Trevor and his friends Ben, Randy and Carl were involved in a shocking event that took place in an abandoned house long considered haunted. The events at the Thurman House left each of them scarred in their own way, and now Ben, the only one who stayed in Grimshaw, has committed suicide. When Trevor returns to Grimshaw himself, events occur which have an eerie parallel to those from the past.

This novel is definitely creepy and atmospheric, but more than that it is melancholic, and actually quite sad in places. It is a story about friendship and about the passage of life. It certainly resonated with me and in some ways with where I am at this time in my own life. Not the obvious areas of drama, but I am approaching a similar age to the main characters in the story, and this is as much a book about the onset of middle-age as anything else. It is a story about the events that shape a person's life, and what we do with them as we attempt to move forward.

I think it's fair to say that this is actually a fairly masculine book as well. I don't mean in a posturing, strutting, blood and adrenalin way. But in that it very much centres on the bonds that men and boys form with one another, and the way that men feel they need to be in the world. Again, a lot of this I really connected with, but I do wonder if female readers will connect as easily.

Originally, I expected this to be little more than an enjoyable haunted house story. In actuality there is much more to it than that. At its heart, The Guardians is a classic coming of age story with supernatural overtones, in the tradition of Stephen King's IT and The Body (which became the film, Stand by Me). It has all the ingredients of an atmospheric chiller, a suspenseful crime thriller, and an excellent focus point in the abandoned Thurman House. Above all, it is an emotive story about the passage of time, and the importance of overcoming the shadows of the past.

Awesome Ghost Story!
By Mel Odom
Andrew Pyper's novel The Guardians sucked me in on the first page and just wouldn't let me go until I'd finished it. There have been a lot of comparisons to Stephen King's It and "The Body," the short story from Different Seasons that became the movie Stand By Me. Those comparisons are dead on in so many way, but Pyper offers a different look at everything and displays a chilling creepiness that is mesmerizing.

The pacing in the novel makes the book hard to put down too. It's just way too easy to keep flipping pages. I finished it up in the dark, in the quiet of the house, just as it should be finished. This is definitely an atmospheric read and you should choose your surroundings wisely. Also, it would probably help to budget time to finish the book rather than just occasionally reading it.

The characters in the book are pretty well defined, but it's that sense of knowing all four of these guys that really got to me. Growing up at that age, I remember all the Carls, Bens, Randys, and Trevors that passed through the halls at my high school. Everybody had their own problems, their own struggles with fitting in, but you just didn't see the cracks because everybody was pretending that high school was easy.

When I saw that Pyper intended to present alternating chapters - one in the present and one in the past - I was somewhat disenchanted. I didn't see how the author could keep from breaking his narrative pacing. But he does. Every chapter Pyper has written blends perfectly with the last, and it's like watching the coals in a campfire die out one by one until there is only the cold, harsh fear of the unknown waiting up ahead.

This is a haunted house story, and even though it feels familiar, there are enough twists and turns along the way that it still feels new at the same time. But that's part of the pleasure of this book. The tale is like a half-remembered fever dream that drags you back down into the morass. You can recall some of what's going on, but only enough to let you know that what's coming is going to be pretty horrible.

Some of the best aspects of the book are all the mysteries Pyper has woven into the narrative. For a long time, the reader doesn't have all the pieces to the story to figure out everything that's going on, what happened to everyone in the story, and what's really at stake. Then it all comes together in a sudden, chilling blast at the end that will leave you wanting the story to be over and not wanting to let go until you get every last delicious tingle. You'll want to skip ahead, but don't cheat yourself of the experience.

I haven't read Andrew Pyper before, but he's definitely going on my to-be-read list. Thankfully there are four other books to catch up on, but if they all read like this one, I'll be caught up all too soon.

Chilling haunted house tale
By misplaced cajun
Ben, Trevor, Carl, and Randy have been friends for ages. They grew up together in the small town of Grimshaw, saw each other through their teens, played hockey together, and are permanently linked by what they saw and experienced in the old Thurman house. For them, the Thurman house was always a place to avoid. Empty and menacing, the house faced Ben's childhood home. Every once in a while, the kids saw something strange and inexplicable. But one day, something truly terrible happened and the four friends were the only witnesses. Ben never left Grimshaw. He watched the Thurman house tirelessly, serving as guardian and protector of the neighborhood, making sure that whatever lurked inside was never able to leave. But now Ben is dead and the Thurman house is awake again.

Pyper has just the right blend of suspense and atmosphere in this creepy ghost story. THE GUARDIANS is a page-turning hair-raiser for sure.

This is the story of a "no holds barred” pathway through life—from the author’s eccentric childhood, through the tumult of the 1960’s, to the ashram of Adi Da Samraj, the spiritual teacher she encountered in the 70’s. With disarming and raw candor, Meg Fortune McDonnell recounts the ego-deaths and transformations she went through as she followed her unorthodox teacher around the globe—and to uncharted spiritual dimensions not located on the map. To connect her riveting confessions to current events, McDonnell draws on references from “Vanity Fair” to “The Buddhist Bible” and Alanis Morisette to Ramana Maharshi, deftly tracing the recent epoch of our collective spiritual quest along with her personal adventures. The three decades McDonnell spent under the tutelage of her enigmatic teacher were filled with sometimes hair-raising, sometimes hilarious, ultimately uplifting explorations of everything, including: what vampires tell us about the taboo against the spirit and what it really means to be “sexually liberated,” healing debilitating Oedipal wounds and thawing the icy character that freezes out love, uncovering new gender roles and empowering female strengths, dancing as tribal prayer for world peace, recurring and mysterious synchronicities, what true beauty is—in art, friends, & avatars, and blessing meant for everyone. A fascinating life, masterfully told.

Catholic parents and their daughter's radical Guru...a surprising healing!
By Hermes
This book excels on many levels. Having been a lifelong, voracious reader of books (especially spiritual journeys), I have had my appetite fulfilled on many levels by "Tasting the Moon"...literally!!!

The author brings you into the room with her teacher, a 20th century holy man and crazy-wisdom adept. More astonishing to me, she writes her amazing story with her father as her editor and includes a moving chapter "Finding the Lost Treasure" about a deep healing with her mother.

Meg demonstrates a candid understanding of her flaws and expresses her lessons with Irish humor. She describes spiritual experiences that, to me, are astounding in any age but particularly in the 21st century. This book is a credit to her and honors the spiritual giant that she has devoted her life to.

This book is an extraordinary feat of storytelling and oedipal healing for a child raised in an Irish Catholic family of eight children. Read this book and be instructed, helped and supported in your own healing and spiritual exploration.

an authentic pioneer
By Cork B
Long before spirituality was gaining the popularity that it seems to be now, this author threw her life into the scrutiny and discomfort of a spiritual path with a living teacher. I was inspired by reading her story of being an intelligent, thinking, caring, worldly woman living on the fringe. Reading her tale gave me more room for my own life and answered many questions about why one even chooses to devote oneself to a guru in this modern age. Way beyond "Eat, Pray, Love," this book conveys a lifelong journey and not simply a self-help sabbatical.

Sweet, salty, tart, and fresh, Tasting the Moon
By Dallas Allen
Any one that wants to be a to "know thyself", to love well and truely, to risk and learn will be nurtured by Ms. McDonnell's autobiographical account of her life's adventures. This book could be just a cathartic telling of time spent at the feet of a great spiritual teacher but the insights into 20th century life, culture, art, politics, upheavals, and opportunities makes Tasting the Moon an enlightening and entertaining eye witness account of our recent history. I was touched by her candid confessions of her failures and fears as well as her ability in learning to transend them. Growing up with her through the sexual revolution shed light for me on our common experience. Ms. McDonnell's elegant wordsmithing took me on a trip down memory lane but also to places I did not know were there or that I, too would like to go.

Are Prisons Obsolete?, by Angela Y. Davis

With her characteristic brilliance, grace and radical audacity, Angela Y. Davis has put the case for the latest abolition movement in American life: the abolition of the prison. As she quite correctly notes, American life is replete with abolition movements, and when they were engaged in these struggles, their chances of success seemed almost unthinkable. For generations of Americans, the abolition of slavery was sheerest illusion. Similarly, the entrenched system of racial segregation seemed to last forever, and generations lived in the midst of the practice, with few predicting its passage from custom. The brutal, exploitative (dare one say lucrative?) convict-lease system that succeeded formal slavery reaped millions to southern jurisdictions (and untold miseries for tens of thousands of men, and women). Few predicted its passing from the American penal landscape. Davis expertly argues how social movements transformed these social, political and cultural institutions, and made such practices untenable.
In Are Prisons Obsolete?, Professor Davis seeks to illustrate that the time for the prison is approaching an end. She argues forthrightly for "decarceration", and argues for the transformation of the society as a whole.

Review
"In this brilliant, thoroughly researched book, Angela Davis swings a wrecking ball into the racist and sexist underpinnings of the American prison system. Her arguments are well wrought and restrained, leveling an unflinching critique of how and why more than 2 million Americans are presently behind bars, and the corporations who profit from their suffering. Davis explores the biases that criminalize communities of color, politically disenfranchising huge chunks of minority voters in the process. Uncompromising in her vision, Davis calls not merely for prison reform, but for nothing short of 'new terrains of justice.' Another invaluable work in the Open Media Series by one of America's last truly fearless public intellectuals." Cynthia McKinney, former Congresswoman from Georgia

About the Author
Over the last forty-odd years, ANGELA YVONNE DAVIS has been active in numerous organizations challenging prison-related repression. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944, Davis studied at Brandeis University, the Sorbonne, and with Herbert Marcuse at the Goethe Institute. Her advocacy on behalf of political prisoners, and her alleged connection to the Marin County courthouse incident, led to three capital charges, sixteen months in jail awaiting trial, and a highly publicized acquittal in 1972. In 1998, Davis was one of the twenty-five organizers of the historic Berkeley, California conference “Critical Resistance: Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex.” She is the author of many books, including Are Prisons Obsolete? and The Meaning of Freedom. She currently teaches in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Attention Thinkers - stop, order, read and challenge!
By C. White
Found my way to this thought-provoker by way of "13th" on Netflix. Ms Davis masterfully postulates the possibility of a world without prisons. After, first thoroughly pointing out its destruction on an ironically democratic society. I suddenly feel simultaneously enlightened and ashamed that I have been guilty of allowing the notion of so many to be forgotten about. The concept of a societal human surplus and capitalism at the expense of freedom was moving. Especially timely, now, given the political environment and proposals of a southern wall proposed by a familiar "law and order" candidate pitted against an opposing candidate who is the wife of a person arguably responsible for the warp-speed proliferation of the PIC. This book is for thinkers and I thank Ms Davis for raising the question through her contribution - in text and life's work.

Logical and timely
By Penelope
This book is a logical, well-documented and timely exposé of the uselessness and insidiousness of the prison system: bastion of the dehumanised society, prisons should be abolished and replaced by more useful measures that really aim to give everybody the opportunity to live, and not just survive. A sick society has constructed this perverse form of control, the history of which Davis links so clearly to earlier social control such as farm and industrial slavery. This book together with Michel Foucault's "Discipline and Punish" should convince you, if you haven't already understood, that the prison system does not "rehabilitate", nor "reintegrate", but on the contrary, simply controls the disposable but feared "masses". The question is answered clearly, prisons are obsolete.

Great book, fast read
By Dusty Ginner
Great book, fast read. I think this is a great starter book for folks who are on the edge about how they feel about the prison system. This book gives you some great fundamental concepts that you can take with you to read and understand other books about prison abolition. Plus, Angela Davis is just amazing.
