About the Author

Paulo Teixeira da Cruz, BS in Civil Engineering from Mackenzie University School of Engineering (1957); holds both a Masters from MIT and a PhD degree in Geotechnical engineering from University of São Paulo – where he has worked for over 40 years. His first work with dams was in the historical Três Marias Dam and in the past 50 years of his professional life he has worked on countless dams all over Brazil. Mr. Cruz was in the board of consultants for the Campos Novos Dam and since the 80’s he has been rendering his expertise as an independent consultant. He is the author of 100 Brazilian Dams – history cases, material, construction, and design (1996) in which the ever so evident Brazilian know-how in dams’ design and construction is consolidated. Nowadays, Mr. Cruz is the actual Vice-President of the CFRD International Society.

Bayardo Materón, Civil Engineer graduate from Cauca University, Popayán, Colombia (1960), he holds a MSc degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, Indiana, USA (1965). He works as a consulting engineer in the field of rockfill dams and hydro power construction methods. Since the completion of Alto Anchicayá CFRD in 1974, he has been involved with many leading engineering organizations on design and construction of rockfill dams and hydro projects. Member of several boards of consultants for different projects under construction, Mr. Materón is the actual President of the CFRD International Society. He has participated in the design and construction of the world’s highest CFRDs such as Alto Anchicayá, Salvajina, Porce III, Ranchería (Colombia); Foz do Areia, Xingó, Segredo, Itá, Itapebi, Machadinho, Campos Novos, Barra Grande (Brazil); Aguamilpa, El Cajón, La Yesca, La Parota (Mexico); Antamina, Torata, Olmos (Peru); Caracoles, Punta Negra (Argentina); Messochora (Greece); Kannaviou (Cyprus); Bakún (Malaysia); Mohale (Lesotho, Africa); Tiangshenqiao 1 (China); Merowe (Sudan); Berg River, Braamhoek (South Africa); Santa Juana, Puclaro, Punilla, Ancoa, Carén (Chile); Kárahnjúkar (Iceland); and Siah Bishe (Iran).

Manoel de Souza Freitas Jr., BS in Civil Engineering (1969), from São Carlos School of Engineering, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Since 1970 has participated in several dams project designs and construction activities in water supply and hydroelectric power generation as a geotechnical engineer. Nowadays, he is an independent consultant for several construction companies and a consultant for the World Bank and Inter American Bank in hydro projects in Brazil. Mr. Freitas has participated in the Tianshengqiao 1 Project (1,200 MW, P. R. China) as a Chief Engineer and Manager, and has been working as an independent consultant for several large CFRDs such as Barra Grande, Campos Novos, and Mazar (Republic of Ecuador).

Review of a CFRD book

The book covers all the necessary design and construction details of the concrete face rockfill dam. Other than that, it also contained information for most of the major constructed CFRD in the world. While it will be too lengthy to write in this review, however, I would like to stress that I actually bought the second book within two months time!

TENSE

I read book one ‘Living with Killers’ and quite enjoyed it. I had to know what happened to Rachel, Blake and that slippery Greg. Greg is one character I wouldn’t want to meet but he makes this story very interesting, its so tense and hard to know what’s going to happen next. It’s had to trust anyone including the police or your own father. But will Blake find Rachel? The poor girl tangled with killers, Rebels and Liars. Adam Nicholls is a talented crime writer.
I thoroughly enjoyed Running with Rebels, I am now moving on to part three ‘Living with Liars’ I have to know what happens next…..

I loved this book. This book had action, drama and mystery. I am going to read the other books in this series. This book would make a great action movie. This book reminded me of James Patterson's Alex Cross series. I like this type of book/story genre.

The book "The girl of red hair," was written by Christine Lidop, the author was born in New Zealand and enjoys reading and cooking in spare time, she has written other books such as red rose. The book is easy to understand and is the Human Interest category.
He tells the story of Mark Saller, a security guard Mason's, and one day on Wednesday he sees a girl with red hair with a baby, and begin to notice that every Wednesday she goes to shop, another day he sees her kissing a man and is pensndo it was her boyfriend, but at a party in a club and he finds her and her sister who also has red hair and yes this is the one that has a boyfriend and son.

In a field full of books on innovation, this one stands very tall.

Being a TV personality does not do a person any favors as the medium lessens the impact of the real person. Witness this good book. It is thoughtful, surprisingly delightfully fresh and well written. Lang also does what Christensen does - she makes notes that are as useful as the text. This is a serious book that will change the way you think (as David Chilton said) .For me it was the comment about being a problem finder rather than a solver that opened my eyes. All Canadians can learn from this. I would advise every leader, educator and parent to buy this book and inculcate its ideas in everyone you come across. In a field full of books on innovation, this one stands very tall. Great for a flight from SF to New York.

It is HUGE. Really. And heavy. There's nothing you haven't seen already. Tons of incredible pictures in a book. And if you expect to see yourself in the crowd on one of the pics, just give it up. There's only 4 or 5 pictures of the crowd, most of them in Buenos Aires.

It's good to complete your collection, though. It's not extraordinary.

Guy O did a great job capturing Madonna during the S&S tour. The book is colorful, delightful, captures all the fun times of the S&S tour and it's a large coffee table book. I only take one star off because the binding isn't the best, otherwise it's a book worth getting. :)

Any history buff will treasure this gem of writing.

I knew Ed when he was in prison in Monroe. We were both teacher assistants in the computer lab in the community college that taught classes in the prison. I have read a LOT of prisoners' writings over the years -- 90% of it pathetically painful to read. I expected Ed's writing to be better than average... but was delighted to find that the book is REMARKABLY well written. He tells just enough of the story to keep things moving along, but not so much that the reader is bogged down in trivial details. The writing is superbly paced. The mark of a good writer is the ability to sustain reader interest page after page, and Ed manages to do just that.

"I used Ulf Leonhardt's "Measuring the Quantum State of Light" (MQSL) in my quantum optics course when the book first appeared in 1997, and wished it were longer. Leonhardt writes in a lucid prose that moves quickly from basics to deep applications in clever, efficient derivations that are accessible to advanced undergraduates. "Essential Quantum Optics" expands the earlier work and breaks new pedagogical ground with a "Horizons" chapter on the intersection of optics and general relativity. Topics like Unruh and Hawking radiation are beautifully explained and related to concepts more familiar to the optics and atomic physics community. Leonhardt and colleagues after all "wrote the book" on some of these topics, and we can be grateful that he has taken the time to explain them here to a broad audience. Other new features are a chapter on irreversible processes and a careful treatment of the Casimir effect (in a technically more advanced Appendix) for which many who have struggled with the literature on this effect will be grateful. There will be disagreement on what is "essential" to know about quantum optics. The topics that are included, however, are well motivated and treated with elegance and insight. The figures are outstanding. Questions and exercises at the end of each chapter are well chosen and touch on some of the missing topics. "Essential Quantum Optics" rises to a very high standard for technical exposition. It is an ideal text for this subject."

About the Author
Ulf Leonhardt is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of St. Andrews. His research interests include quantum electrodynamics in media and state reconstruction in quantum mechanics. He is one of the inventors of invisibility devices and artificial black holes.

Concise and beautiful

This is an elegant book about the quantum field theory of light.
It covers a wide range of interesting topics from quantum vacuum to
entanglement to black-holes. It is written by a theoretical
expert who obviously appreciates and understands experimental physics.
The prose are elegant and cleverly avoid bulking up the book with
equations.

This book is not an easy book to read for the subject at hand
is not easy. But, if you work through it, you will be quickly
rewarded with understanding.

The book is also not a first book in quantum mechanics; to read
this book you should already have something at the level of Ramamurti Shankar.
The first half of that book should do, certainly quantum oscillators chapter.

The book is of course not perfect and improvement in exposition in some
places can make a faster reading but even the struggle, if you have time,
is helpful.

Get this book for your first reading on quantum field theory of light.
It is like a key to many doors.

The book presents equations copied from other books of QFT and Quantum Optics with out understanding and with no critique
the author seems to believe that nothing in print may be wrong.
The book does not comprehend the difference between mathematical operators and physical fields
"explanations" are piled up without space into one overcrowded paragraphs
Details are missing consistently
if you wish to know what is k in some formula you have to go back pages and you will be lucky to find it.
the refraction index is maybe relative refractive index, maybe not.
And black holes are a variation on photons?
