A book like no other
By AM Ramzy
What’s beautiful about this book is that it focuses on an oft-forgotten, overlooked element of Islam, in fact what you might call the core of the faith which is ‘joy’. If lived in its fullest sense, Islam, a relationship with Allah, is meant to imbue life with a deep sense of joy and contentment. And the purpose of this book is to help each and every individual who reads it achieve this. It’s not long-winded theory, or detached descriptions but a practical, weekly guide to achieving this quality which underlies achievement in this life and the next. Its essays are grounded in Qur’an and Sunnah and draw upon the works of a plethora of scholars, weaving these in and out of the author’s own experience in helping women from across the world make great leaps in their faith.

It is organized into weekly lessons, each a few pages long, ending with a reflection task and a project. In this way, the principles, lessons and teachings transmitted in the 52 essays can become actualized, not just ‘learned’, but ‘lived’, as the book itself states. Joy becomes not just a familiar concept, but a reality.

This book is unique for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is the only book I am aware of that is set up in this way, tackling contemporary and age old challenges and dilemmas which face every Muslim seeking a relationship with their Creator, with practical suggestions, tied in with the yearly calendar so that every lesson is relevant not only spiritually but temporally. Secondly, it is written by a contemporary female scholar of the highest caliber. Anse Tamara Gray brings together not only decades of teaching experience, both religious, spiritual and academic, but also over twenty years of study in core Islamic sciences at the hands of renowned female scholars, making her not just an author but an authority in the field of modern spiritual development, or tarbiya.

The 52 essays, written and disseminated to women around the world before they were compiled into a book, have already touched the lives of many seeking the next steps on the spiritual path. Now in a book form, these lessons and reflections can, with Allah’s grace and permission, brighten the lives and lighten the loads of countless others, and bring much needed joy into the journey of the Muslim woman and man as they work their way through its projects and pages.

Such an important resource!!
By Jenan H
Finally, a meaningful book of weekly spiritual guidance for Muslims! As a convert to Islam, I missed these kinds of lesson books for years, until I found Joy Jots. It isn't didactic or preachy, nor sappy or self-important. It's written by a real scholar so it addresses deep spiritual issues that truly encourage growth, and she's also an American, so the style and language are accessible to Westerners. It would be great to use as a halaqah book!

Success and Luck: Good Fortune and the Myth of Meritocracy, by Robert H. Frank

From New York Times bestselling author and economics columnist Robert Frank, a compelling book that explains why the rich underestimate the importance of luck in their success, why that hurts everyone, and what we can do about it

How important is luck in economic success? No question more reliably divides conservatives from liberals. As conservatives correctly observe, people who amass great fortunes are almost always talented and hardworking. But liberals are also correct to note that countless others have those same qualities yet never earn much. In recent years, social scientists have discovered that chance plays a much larger role in important life outcomes than most people imagine. In Success and Luck, bestselling author and New York Times economics columnist Robert Frank explores the surprising implications of those findings to show why the rich underestimate the importance of luck in success--and why that hurts everyone, even the wealthy.

Frank describes how, in a world increasingly dominated by winner-take-all markets, chance opportunities and trivial initial advantages often translate into much larger ones--and enormous income differences--over time; how false beliefs about luck persist, despite compelling evidence against them; and how myths about personal success and luck shape individual and political choices in harmful ways.

But, Frank argues, we could decrease the inequality driven by sheer luck by adopting simple, unintrusive policies that would free up trillions of dollars each year--more than enough to fix our crumbling infrastructure, expand healthcare coverage, fight global warming, and reduce poverty, all without requiring painful sacrifices from anyone. If this sounds implausible, you'll be surprised to discover that the solution requires only a few, noncontroversial steps.

Compellingly readable, Success and Luck shows how a more accurate understanding of the role of chance in life could lead to better, richer, and fairer economies and societies.

Review
Longlisted for the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year 2016

"The reminder about the important role of luck is welcome."--Enlightened Economist

"Frank is not just arguing that luck plays an important role in the lives of successful people such as Al Pacino. If that were all he was doing, his book would be engaging but trivial. But it is much more interesting than that."--Jonathan Derbyshire, Financial Times

"Frank's book gives a compelling argument for why we should consider our collective needs more when we look to change society for the better."--Jill Suttie, Psy.D., Greater Good

"Frank deftly weaves personal anecdotes . . . with fascinating case studies on the importance of luck in fields ranging from television to evolutionary theory."--Fortune

"The most striking of Frank's arguments is a computer-simulated proof of luck's importance, even in very nearly meritocratic situations."--Tim Smith-Laing, Daily Telegraph

"Reading Success and Luck is almost like having a robust conversation over dinner--a simple premise, some explanation, a few examples. . . . It is commendable that he is addressing the problem with an actual solution in mind."--Kris Rothstein, Bookslut

"Frank makes his points persuasively."--Australian Financial Review

"This is a bold vision and, although controversial, has a good deal more realism than the dangerous siren calls from the left for wage caps or punitive income tax rates for high earners."--Matthew Syed, The Times

"Like any good economist, Frank backs up his argument with studies and statistics; and like any good behavioral economist, he investigates why this obvious fact is so hard for so many Americans to accept, and offers some strategies for overcoming that resistance."--Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

"Frank points out that for every big winner, there are scores of people who are as skilled, hard-working and intelligent, but came in just behind. The lack of a lucky break can be the difference between wild success and a near miss or worse."--Barry Ritholtz, Bloomberg View

"Success and Luck is an important book: elegantly written, well argued and desisting from self-indulgence in its length."--Tim Wigmore, New Statesman

"The book is diverting and easy to read. . . . He makes a compelling case for the role of luck in much of the wealth held by people in developed societies."--Ouida Taaffe, Financial World

"[An] occasionally humorous, yet most insightful book."--David Marx Book Reviews

"Robert Frank's enjoyable treatise, Success and Luck, might be the better bet for fixing society. His case histories show that while winners often need talent and hard work to succeed, they also need simple, dumb luck."--Debora MacKenzie, New Scientist

"How important is luck in monetary success?. . . . Is luck as important as hard work in becoming successful?. . . . These important questions--we ponder them often--that economists rarely bother to study. Except for one of my favourite economists Robert Frank."--Ross Gittins, Sydney Morning Herald

"What makes Success and Luck different is that Frank connects the importance of luck in determining personal economic success with a set of larger policy recommendations."--Dr. Joshua Kim, Inside Higher Ed

"Success and Luck is written in a clear, engaging and personable style, not least because it is littered with anecdotes and stories illustrating the huge effects that tiny chance events can have. I found examples from Frank's own life especially compelling."--Dan McArthur, LSE Review of Books

From the Back Cover

"Building a successful life requires a deep conviction that you are the author of your own destiny. Building a successful society requires an equally deep conviction that no one's destiny is their own to write. Balancing these seemingly contradictory ideas may be the most important social challenge of our time. And Robert Frank has just written the most important book on the subject. Success and Luck is essential reading."--Duncan Watts, principal researcher, Microsoft Research, and author of Everything Is Obvious (Once You Know the Answer): How Common Sense Fails Us

"Success and Luck is a wonderful read--insightful, humorous, loaded with evidence, and full of common sense."--Frank Convery, chief economist of the Environmental Defense Fund

"The most skillful writer in economics has now written an amazing book on luck. Robert Frank brilliantly explains why luck is playing an increasingly important role in the world's outcomes, why it is hard for all of us to realize it, and why there is a simple fix to the vast inequalities caused by sheer luck--a solution that will make all of our lives better. You will feel very lucky to have read it."--Nicholas Epley, author of Mindwise: Why We Misunderstand What Others Think, Believe, Feel, and Want

"We all like to think we live in a just world, where most people get what they deserve most of the time. In this lovely and insightful book, Robert Frank urges us to think again. His poignant description of random wins and losses in his own career complements his deft summary of the broad evidence that chance shapes success. Not that we shouldn't all try hard to succeed--we should, rather, try harder to pool risks and hedge bets in ways that improve both efficiency and justice."--Nancy Folbre, author of Greed, Lust, and Gender: A History of Economic Ideas

"Growing inequality of wealth, leading to growing inequality of political power, has become a first-order social problem. Understanding the role of luck in economic outcomes is the first step toward formulating sensible policies to get runaway inequality back under control. Robert Frank's Success and Luck is a jewel: succinct, well written, and convincing. We're all lucky to be able to read it."--Mark A.R. Kleiman, New York University's Marron Institute

"Robert Frank has a terrific mind and a huge heart. In this book, he shows that luck plays a massive role in successful lives--and he explains precisely why we underestimate that role. In the process, he offers important recommendations for how to make our economy both more efficient and more fair. A beautiful book."--Cass R. Sunstein, Harvard University

"In this very valuable and readable book, Robert Frank presents the evidence and tightens the case for an important and vastly underappreciated fact: luck has more influence on personal success than most of us recognize or admit. He also makes the case that luck's role in where we end up in terms of income, education, status, and other outcomes has a big impact on how we perceive government, taxes, and public social spending."--Lane Kenworthy, University of California, San Diego

"Robert Frank's Success and Luck should be read by everybody. Not only will you learn much new, subtle, important economics, you will also learn about yourself. You will be more generous and more satisfied: because you will see your successes as not just the product of your own hard work, but also of some good luck and help from others. All that, and, also, Success and Luck is a joy to read. I am going to send a copy to my brother (a physicist) and to my son (an economist) for their birthdays."--George A. Akerlof, Nobel Laureate in Economics

Thought-provoking discussion.
By David J. Aldous
In ancient times, philosophers started to ponder to what extent success depends on individual ability and effort, rather than fate or divine intervention. Nowadays we mostly categorize these external factors as chance or luck. Over the last 150 years in the U.S., the "Land of Opportunity" individualistic philosophy has emphasized the ability side. Academics take a more nuanced view, expressed well in an earlier book Dance with Chance: Making Luck Work for You (slightly edited).

“Hard work, determination, education and experience count for a great deal as regards success. But the data available suggests that luck is almost entirely responsible for which hard working, determined, educated and experienced people make it in life.”

Most accounts of this issue, such as Outliers: The Story of Success rely on stories. This book also has plenty of stories in which chance events led to success that seems unlikely without those events. But it is the first nontechnical book I've read that actually accompanies its stories with some account of “the data available". Part of this involves the “winner take all" parts of the current economy, where rewards accrue to only a few individuals. Part involves laboratory psychological experiments involving game-like settings where individuals are asked to make choices. And there are a few "toy model" mathematical simulations.

I can confidently recommend this book as the best single treatment of its topic. Having said that, I do have a few quibbles.
(a) The lab experiments involve short-term decision with negligible real-world consequences to the participants, so it’s mot clear how they apply outside the lab,
(b) He notes that, after a point, acquisition of more wealth does not lead to more happiness. So it’s odd to use the word “success” to mean acquisition of wealth.
(c) He proposes a progressive consumption tax, to reduce spending by the wealthy on positional goods (illustrated by expensive weddings and McMansions). But he makes no attempt to quantify the amount this would raise as taxes or reduce extravagance.
(d) His mathematical models, combining “ability and effort” on one side with “pure luck” on the other side, miss a key point, which is the choice to undertake risky activity. When we look at the most successful people in a field, what we see is not just “ability plus luck”, but it’s “ability plus choice to take risks plus luck”.

INTERESTING READ--BUT "LUCK" AND "SUCCESS" ARE NEVER DEFINED OR MEASURED
By bill greene
The basic premise of this book is that successful people do not appreciate how lucky they have been and therefore they consume too much themselves and resist “public investments” that could help those less fortunate. The author suggests that the resulting income inequality could be reduced “by adopting simple unintrusive policies that would free up trillions of dollars each year--more than enough to fix our crumbling infrastructure, expand health care coverage, fight global warming, and reduce poverty, all without requiring painful sacrifices from anyone.”
I did not give the book five stars because the author does not live up to his promises: to show how understanding the role of luck would reduce inequality and that a simple policy could painlessly solve our budgetary problems. However, Frank provides some interesting examples of major creative events that can be traced to unusual chance circumstances, including a few I first read about in Malcolm Gladwell’s books-- the Outliers and The Tipping Point.

Most of the book is devoted to showing how important luck is in our lives, that most successful people benefitted from a lot of luck, and if they recognized that they would be more humble and charitable to those less successful. However, Frank blames no one, and criticizes no one. He just believes that successful people should be humble and more empathetic. However, he creates a straw horse by stating that successful people attribute their success “almost entirely” to hard work and talent, and believe that their success did not depend “to any significant extent on luck.” Thus he implies that they deny luck had anything to do with their success and he himself makes no attempt to measure the amount of luck involved. Clearly, if it played a small part, the respondents were correct saying it was not a “significant” factor. Most successful people I know will admit to having had some good luck along the way. Furthermore, Frank states that success is not attainable without a lot of talent and hard work so all his efforts to elevate the role of luck appear of slight importance. And the alleged connection between luck and inequality never became evident?

The book’s theme lacks real clarity, in part, because the term “luck” is not clearly defined. The author writes that successful Americans were lucky to be born in the freest and richest nation in the world, to affluent parents, in enabling communities, with the best inherited genes, nourished by the best schools, hired by the best companies, and eventually promoted to wealth and prestige. Now almost all those lucky breaks are granted to most Americans; probably well over half the population; and for them, only the effort to do well at school and find a good job are needed to succeed. It is widely known that being born into a stable middle or upper class family in America is the best predictor of success—because those children are shaped by superior communities, families, genetics, and an enabling culture to do well in life. What they make of it depends on their exercise of free will, self-improvement, emotional restraint, and hard work. Their good luck is conferred at birth, relatively equally to all of them. If “public investment” were to reduce inequality it should be aimed at the growing number of children being raised in broken homes, often illegitimate, amidst violence and abuse, with only a negative cultural exposure to stunt their growth to maturity—but that “bad luck” or its amelioration is not addressed by the author.

I discovered half way through the book that the “simple policies” to save trillions of dollars that were promised in the beginning of the book was simply a call to replace the current income tax with a graduated consumption tax. This is a repeat of his arguments in The Darwin Economy that consumers spend too much frivolously and government should redirect spending patterns for the common good. The author’s theory is that taxing consumption would reduce “wasteful” spending by the wealthy and that they could then comfortably pay more taxes at progressively higher rates. Because there would be a deduction from taxable income equal to amounts “saved,” the tax would also theoretically motivate everyone to spend less and save more. There was no mention anywhere to reduce government spending. The emphasis was to reduce the peoples’ spending so they could save more and pay more taxes. Certainly, any change to the existing IRS Code is worth consideration, but if we want to limit wasteful spending perhaps the author should examine the goverment's checkbooks first?

Out of Luck
By Scuba Diver
It takes the author all of 2 sentences to start this book with a political bias, which is a pity because the subject matter is really interesting. "Success and Luck" continues the recent genre of churning out a promising book based on a superb review in the Wall Street Journal. Is anyone else tired of paying $20 for a 200-250 hardcover "essay" whose bulk is merely citations or anecdotes of other works? Can academia get even more intellectually lazy? The most frustrating part of this book is that the meaningful subject matter is politicized. Rather than framing the context in terms of "Liberals believe in luck, and Conservatives don't," readers would have been much better served with some quality analysis of luck. Luck in birth origin. Luck in demographics. Last name. Religion. Community. Zip code. Education. Gender. Hair Color. There are so many variables that influence "outcomes," which is really what the author wants to discuss, but never fully gets around to it. If you want a better discussion of chance, luck, and meritocracy leading ultimately to outcomes, check out "Chaos Monkeys." There are approximately 12 pages in "Success and Luck" that are superb, the rest is an academic's diatribe against the perceived evils of the tax code and the rich (who are only Conservatives of course) that don't believe in luck. But those 12 pages are good.

African American Music: An IntroductionFrom Routledge

African American Music: An Introduction is a collection of thirty essays by leading scholars whch survey major African American musical genres, both sacred and secular, from slavery to the present. The work brings together, in a single volume, treatments of African American music that have existed largely independent of each other. The research is based in large part on ethnographic fieldwork, which privileges the voices of the music-makers themselves, while interpreting their narratives through a richly textured mosaic of history and culture. The book is replete with references to seminal recordings and recording artists, musical transcriptions, photographs, and illustrations that bring the music to life as expressions of human beings. At the same time, it includes the kind of musical specificity that brings clarity to the structural, melodic, and rhythmic characteristics that both distinguish and unify the music of African-Americans.

And although they refused to oblige their parents by marrying, they have always been the best of friends.

But as Desford pursues Cherry's grandfather and father around the seedier fringes of society, Hetta is forced to wonder if he might not, at last, have fallen in love. Pretty good for her 33rd Regency novel
By Michael K. Smith
This is one of the author's later Regency romances (her next-to-last one, in fact) and while it's not nearly her best, it's not bad at all. It could also practically be titled "Regency Road Trip." Charity Steane (but who prefers to be called "Cherry") has the misfortune to be the daughter of a con man and wastrel who essentially abandoned her to a private school when she was small -- and neglected to pay the bills. Charity was eventually packed off to the country home of her aunt, who saw her as a source of free household labor and treated her abominably. Having taken all she can stand, Charity packs her old portmanteau and sets out on foot for London, to seek assistance from her grandfather, who had cut all ties with her father. However, though she's nineteen, Charity looks and acts much younger and has almost no experience at all of the world. Cut to young Viscount Desford who has been visiting his parents and is also on his way back to London. He sees Cherry trudging along the road and, being both a gentleman and a Good Person, picks her up for her own safety, promising to escort her where she's going. When Granddad (who wasn't expecting company) is discovered to have gone off to the country himself, Des is stuck with the bewildered and panicky girl, for whom he now considers himself responsible. What is he to do with her while he tries to locate the old man? He can't take her to his own home -- people would talk. So he conveys her quickly to the home, not far from his parents' place, of his very old friend, Henrietta Silverdale. Nearly ten years before, Des and Hetta had been the subjects of a parental conspiracy to get them married off, which they had successfully resisted, but they've remained very close and have frequently come to each other's rescue. So Hetta will look after young Charity while Des pursues his quest for her relief.

That's the set-up, somewhat reminiscent of a Hollywood-style romantic comedy, and it works very well. The supporting characters are equally well drawn and the action is more pall-mall than usual in Heyer's work, as Desford, playing the gallant knight errant, hares off to Harrowgate and Bath, interviewing reluctant servants and dealing with rebellion on the part of his own butler and groom, whose sense of the social niceties are more rigid than his own. The pattern you would expect, from experience in reading Heyer's books would be for Des and Charity to discover their feelings for each other in the last chapter, but -- well, I won't give the ending away. But it's an enjoyable weekend's read.

Witty and Satisfying
By Gypsi Phillips Bates
I'll admit it openly and unashamedly: I am a Georgette Heyer fangirl. Anyone who knows me, knows that I simply don't read romances or chick lit, so this admission is a rather earth shattering.

I have been a Heyer fan, since that day in the library when, ever searching for something to recommend to a precocious early teens reader, our local librarian Jill turned to the other librarian Mary and said, "How about Georgette Heyer?". Mary, the Heyer reader, decreed that was an excellent idea, and lead me through the stacks to the H's, showed me the row of Heyer's novels and recommended one. It was love at first read. Since, I've tried other "Regency" authors, but my addiction is to Ms. Heyer, not to the genre of Regency Romance.

Ms. Heyer was excruciatingly historically accurate (to the annoyance of her critics) and filled her books with as much of the language and flavor of Regency England as she possibly could (another sore spot with critics). For a teenager with Asperger's, a predilection toward British history and a love of words, Ms. Heyer's Regency novels, full of such detailed depictions of high society life during this time, were gifts from heaven. I still read them anytime I want a lighter read, to escape completely and totally into another time.

Charity Girl has long been one of my favorites, since that first reading when I found myself surprised (due to slowness to pick up on social cues, even in books) with the ending couples. In this delightful novel, the Viscount Desford (quite the eligible bachelor), meets young (beneath her years) Charity Steane in the role of poor relation in her aunt's house. The next day, he literally runs across her as he is returning to London; she has run away from her unkind (though not cruel, but certainly not loving) aunt and is attempting to walk to London.

Desford knows that she is unsuspecting prey for any blackguard that drives by and does what any decent gentleman would do: he reluctantly becomes involved. His attempts to help Charity find a safe place send him from one shire to the next watering hole, looking for her grandfather. In the meantime, he has placed Charity in the charge of his best friend, Hetta, much to Hetta's chagrin. They've been friends since nursery days, though, and Hetta is persuaded to help him out this scrape, though she worries about the outcome.

Charity Girl is witty and intelligent, with a satisfying romantic conclusion. Her characters are lively and their dialogue is a joy to read. For light reading (though meatier than most light reading), one can't go wrong with this one.

Charity Girl

Viscount Ashley Desford meets Charity(aka Cherry) Steane at a gathering while visiting his aunt. The next day as he returns to his London home, he encounters her walking on a lonely road and seeing the peril that she could fall into, takes her to his best friend Henrietta(Hetta) Silverdale's house. So begins a comedy of errors and misunderstandings as Desford tries to find Cherry's grandfather and avoid scandal.

All the main characters were very likable and even the baddies give the reader a chuckle. One of the biggest problems with this book is that I believe that the novel may have benefited from being shorter because there were parts of it that I was not bored with but certainly not interested in. A prime example of this is when Desford sets off to find Cherry's grandfather. The long descriptions of the journey there and back were somewhat tedious and I was impatient to hear more about the main characters not about road travels, broken wheels and horses going lame. Another part of the story that was not as well handled was the romance between the two lovers(sorry I will not tell who these are, you will have to find that out yourself). Not enough time was spent developing that story line and the reader is left to fill in their back story. By the time they get together, you are happy for them but its hard to feel very invested because you are not given the opportunity.

It wasn't all that I thought it was going to be but it was not bad at all. Something tells me that this book is not Georgette Heyer at her best. All in all an entertaining read.
