About the Author

Prof Charles Sheppard has spent 35 years researching the ecology of coral reefs and their role in supporting coastal communities. He is interested especially in effects of pollution and climate change on tropical marine systems, and has been Editor of the scientific journal Marine Pollution Bulletin for 15 years.
Dr. Simon Davy is a specialist in the fields of coral-algal symbiosis and coral disease. He studied for his PhD at Bangor University. He then conducted postdoctoral research at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Florida and the University of Sydney, before holding faculty positions at the University of Plymouth and now Victoria University of Wellington.
Dr Graham Pilling has considerable practical experience in tropical and coral reef ecosystems. He has gained in depth experience in the practical assessment and management of coral reef fisheries in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf. His recent work has focused on the implications of climate change for coral reef ecosystem services.

Used this book as a textbook for Coral Reefs class

I've taken or served as teaching assistant for a number of classes on coral reef ecology, and we've never had a good, comprehensive textbook that was suitable for undergraduate students. I was excited to see this book this year, particularly since it appeared just before I taught my own undergraduate class on "Ecology of Reefs, Mangroves, and Seagrasses". We've read a number of the chapters on coral reefs, corals, and human impacts. I do wish there was more information on the organisms of the coral reef - algae, invertebrates, mammals & reptiles, as I had to find other sources for that. However, it is well-organized information, clear, and very up-to-date. I would use it as a textbook if/when I teach the class again and recommend the series to others teaching about the biology of habitats. We also used Hogarth's (2007) book in the series on mangroves & seagrasses.

Well written, informative, relevant to current developments

This is a well written introduction to coral reef biology, potentially useful for both a senior-undergraduate course or any diver wishing to learn more about the coral reefs she is hovering above.

The book treats many aspects of reefs, from the main reef builders, the abiotic environment, reef microbiology and the world of coral reef fishes. Most figures are black/white, but the book also contains some color plates. It goes into a good amount of detail, and covers some very recent scientific studies, but at the same time is written in a readable style. Often text boxes cover special topics, such as the crown-of-thorns starfish.

What I really appreciated is the significant part dedicated to conservation issues and the damage done to reefs by everything from overfishing, the creating of artificial islands, sewage run-off, to global warming and ocean acidification. When treating these subjects, the authors don't fall into the all-is-lost mode, but also outline how intelligent decisions by humans can make a big difference in reef health.

Im a biology student and study corals. I found this book great as an introduction to the subject and a quick guide for remembering the basics. So is very useful for students of these ecosystems and for amateurs. Reading the book gives you the knowledge to understand more specific documents like papers later.

This is a great book for knowledge on the science of menu writing. From content to flow and placement of particular items. Anyone likely buying this book is doing it because of school and this would be one of the books I would not sell back at the end of the semester!

The Naked Male Is Liberated!

David Leddick continues in this second volume of naked men what he began in NAKED MEN, PIONEERING MALE NUDES, 1935-1955, bringing us up to 2000, the year this volume was published. The genie is out of the bottle as famous and unknown men pose before many different photographers. In addition to George Platt Lynes, there are photographs here by George Dureau, Ken Duncan, Francesco Scavullo, Tom Bianchi, Robert Mapplethorpe, Greg Gorman, Harriet Liebowitz, Jim French, Pierre & Gilles, to name a few. Additionally there are drawings and/or paintings by Paul Cadmus, Michael Leonard, Don Bachardy and George Dureau. Among the famous and sometimes infamous men who bared all are Yves Saint Laurent, Rupert Everett, David Kopay, the exhibitionist Peter Berlin who apparently only photographs himself, Charlton Heston--hello!--Burt Lancaster from THE SWIMMER-- remember that 1968 movie made from a John Cheever short story?-- Peter Hinwood, whose name probably means nothing to you until you find out that he was the god Rocky Horror in ROCKY HORROR SHOW-- and Joe Dallesandro, one of Andy Warhol's superstars, who has not aged particularly well, photographed here by Scavullo. Finally we are graced by at least three porn stars: Ryan Idol; Cal Culver a/k/a Casey Donovan, who died of AIDS in 1987; and the notorious Jeff Stryker, (pp. 86-87) whose photo here is a hoot. He is demurely posed, stretched out on a flower-patterned couch with his back to the camera in the tradition of a 19th Century painting of a nude woman. (Seeing that hilarious photograph alone is worth the price of the book.)
Choosing favorite photographs is challenging. I particularly like Harriet Liebowitz's work (pp. 92-93) for her exquisite composition. Both photographs by Pierre & Gilles as always are creative and look like no other artist's work: Midnight Cowboy (pp. 98-99) and Casanova on pages 128-29. The photo of Larry Schleinz by Barry McKinley (p. 9) might have been the sexiest shot in the book had it had not been for the Romain Johnson photo by George Platt Lynes (pp. 24-25) done in 1953. It's easy to see why Leddick chose the photo of Anthony La Fauci by Dianora Niccolina (pp. 76-77) for the cover. Finally I nominate three contemporary photographs of men who have aged beautifully for the "Joy Of Aging" award: John Eddy (p. 82), Scott Wilson, (39) and Mike Helie on page 59.
Collecting these photographs and meeting the models must have been a labor of love. A great concept for a book, Mr. Leddick.

Better as a continuing journal than a photography book

Following "Naked Men" with "Naked Men Too" adds to the resource literature on the development of gender perception during the past century. This is an informative book (yes, there is actually material to READ as well as to see) and to this reviewer the words are better than the varying degrees of quailty in the photography and art. This book may initally appeal to the voyeur but the accompanying text is concise and very helpful in exploring the ever present question of "why is frontal male nudity such a problem for contemporary viewers?". Recommended.

Even Better the Second Time!

I really enjoyed David Leddick `s second book of "Naked Men." If you enjoyed his first Naked Men book, you will surely love this one. This new book covers the male nude from 1950 to 2000. This is a breathtaking volume of men from models and actors, to bodybuilders, dancers, and many others. The photographs are superb, showing how they looked years ago and today. It's not just all photos but also interesting essays broken down in chapters spanning 10 year periods from the days of male nude repression to today's general acceptance of male nudes.
If you're a collector of fine photography books, this is a must for your collection. Plus it's a wonderful history of the past 50 years of male nude photography.

He was a consultant on the design of the famous "Bird's Nest" stadium but called for an Olympic boycott; he received a Chinese Contemporary Art "lifetime achievement award" in 2008 but was beaten by the police in connection with his "citizen investigation" of earthquake casualties in 2009. Ai Weiwei's Blog documents Ai's passion, his genius, his hubris, his righteous anger, and his vision for China.

Ai Weiwei (b. 1957), artist, architect, activist, and outspoken social critic, is one of the most famous and controversial figures in China today. Jumping the Great Firewall and paying for it.

Ai Weiwei's Blog is a collection of courageously honest rants. This book is also a sobering reminder of the price some pay for testing the boundaries of expression in a country that fears freedom. He has now disappeared and in doing so has become more than an important contemporary artist, (see the Phaidon monograph for a good survey.) His detention is emblematic of China's stumble toward the inevitable. We should all be paying close attention.

A VERY revealing and diverse mix of essays, reflections and observations by the Chinese artist who was arrested and is still being "detained" w/out outside contact. Good insights into the mental and physical state of "modern" China as well as topics such as architecture, contemporary artists and art, politics, etc.
