A Fun Read to Finish the Series

"To Marry for Duty" is the third book of the three book series titled "The Husband Fund." My review of the first book of the series, "To Catch a Groom," gives a detailed explanation of the concept of The Husband Fund series. I recommend reading "To Catch a Groom" and "To Win His Heart" before reading this novel; however, it is not a necessity. The husband fund was a legacy established by the parents of triplets to provide funds for each of them to find a husband. The first novel of the series is the story of Greer Duchess, the second novel is the story of Olivia Duchess, and this third novel is the story of Piper Duchess.

As the story opens we find that the protagonists, Nicolas (Nic) de Pastrana and Piper Duchess, are already very much in love with each other. The problem is that neither of them is aware of the other's true feelings. Nic has been in official mourning for his former fiancée who had been killed in a tram accident. Although he had met Piper and fallen head over heels for her, the mourning rules prevented him from approaching Piper. Piper ignorantly made an advance toward Nic and he was forced to reject her. She was deeply hurt so she retuned to New York and threw herself into her business.

When Nic's mourning period came to an end he goes to New York and meets with Piper. Throughout this series a sub-plot of jewelry theft has been woven. In this novel we find that murder is also involved. The investigation has come to a critical point and Nic decides to use this as a pretext to win Piper' heart. He has learned that Piper's two sisters could be in danger if the thief/murder is not apprehended as soon as possible so he is able to convince Piper to enter into a marriage of convenience as part of the plan to capture the murder. When Nic and Piper return to Italy sparks fly between Nic and his father to the extent that his father threatens to renounce Nic as his son unless the marriage is annulled.

Like with the other two novels in this series, Ms. Winters has crafted principled characters with great depth and high moral standards. The story has many twists and turns with a lot of surprises to keep the pages turning. Five stars for this offering.

The Husband Fund - Book #3

4 Stars! ~ This is the final instalment of the Husband Fund trilogy, it was a lovely romance and wrapped up the mystery of the stolen gems very nicely. Our middle sister, Piper, finally gets her heart's desire though Nic really puts her through hoops. It was nice having recaps on the other sister's. I enjoyed this story and the trilogy very much.

This is a series of 3 books... I've written my review under the first book, To Catch a Groom. This series is absolutely the best! You'll be missing something if you don't read all three books, preferably in order, but it doesn't matter if you read the last first. Some of the most original stories I've ever read in this genre.

In 1793, three siblings (Amos, 13; Clara, 12; Jonathan, 7) are separated from their father during their immigration, via flatboat, down the Ohio River from their Pennsylvania home to a new beginning in the Ohio wilderness. After an Indian attack, the three are left with no adult support, scant supplies, no transportation, and a cow in tow to journey along the dangerous Shawnee side of the Ohio to the safety of the Marietta settlement. Readers will recognize the breathless pace they've loved in action movies, defined by the eruption of a new crisis on the heels of each crisis resolution, as the siblings struggle against the odds: scavenging food; stealing fire from the Indians; whittling tools for catching supper; rescuing a young Shawnee from drowning; and treating wounds with chickweed and birch leaves. The author's sturdy plot advances distinctly and chronologically, resulting in pure suspense. She keeps her vocabulary action-oriented and her dialogue straightforward. The young Shawnee's presence raises intriguing philosophical questions regarding the nature of communication and the components of true friendship. A bracing work of historical fiction makes an unfriendly place of the Ohio riverfront as three children fight for their lives. In May 1793 the motherless Dunn family--Papa, Amos, Clara, and Jonathan--have almost completed their long trek from eastern Pennsylvania to the place where they hope to make a new life, the Ohio frontier. Amos, 13, is particularly anxious to start over; his memory of a terrible event and his subsequent guilt can be assuaged only in a new place. When the riverboat that is to carry the family to Marietta is ambushed by Indians, a terrible battle ensues, and in the confusion, the boat goes adrift, carrying the Dunn children down river. A second Indian attack causes them to abandon the boat and they land on the north shore of the Ohio River. Their only course is to walk to Marietta, following the river. Along the way, Amos spots a boy clinging to a floating log, and rescues him. He is an Indian boy, barely alive from a gunshot wound, and the children start to nurse him back to health. Still ahead for them: They are taken prisoner by a band of Shawnee, and need to reach Marietta, hoping to see their father again. Willis (Out of the Storm, 1995, etc.) has created a rousing adventure; it will have readers turning the pages and rooting for the spunky Dunn kids all the way. The purchase was a complete waste of money. The book is missing the entire center. The first few chapters are repeated in the middle of the book. The teacher friend I bought if for, threw it away.

A very worthwhile read about some pretty sturdy young pioneers

My 8 year old son and I really enjoyed "Danger Along the Ohio." The strong-willed and self-reliant characters are very appealing. The language is well-crafted - descriptive, but not too difficult. This setting is late-18th century.

During the 20 years leading up to the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, Indians commonly attacked settlers coming down the Ohio in a futile attempt to prevent the settlement of their traditional hunting lands to the south and their homelands to the north. It was the era of Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, Tecumseh and a host of other storied frontiersmen and women, and Patricia Willis' characters fit right in.

The story revolves around Amos' attempts to befriend the Indian boy he rescues from drowning. Young readers will certainly identify with his awkward and frustrating attempts to win the friendship of his enemy. It is persistence that pays off in the end.

My only criticism is that Ms. Willis reflexively adopts the modern narrative of the sympathetic native and comes off a bit antagonistic toward the settlers. The Indians are vulnerable and human, while the scouts who rescue the children are gruff, forceful, and violent. To be sure, this kind of novel is not the place to depict the realities of savagery committed on both sides of the state of war that existed between these peoples. But Amos would have never been treated with such forbearance. Had Ms Willis managed to successfully bring a more realistic tension to bear on their relationship, with the same result, I would have given it 5 stars.

Still, a very good book about an American era that kids just don't know enough about.

A book recommended for Embedded Programming

Roger Ye has generally done a good job writing this book.

The book deals with constructing an Android system from scratch. Not having a lot of experience in embedded developing but as a Software developer, I found many useful things I did not know about the process, and how Android internally deals with daily problematics (such memory mapping or exception handling). In that sense, Android developers can certainly benefit from the book, even if they are not doing Embedded Programming.

Although some parts are more dense than others, there is generally a good initial job of explaining some concepts that might be oxidized for developers, such as memory management. Building a custom CyanogenMod is a good closure for the book to see a practical example of what you can do, rather than only theoretical information.

Some minor cons: some overuse of source code (is better to showcase a small section and point out to the repository with all the code) and based the development on a environment such as Eclipse - although I am not an expert in which alternatives are available. I can generally recommend this book for anybody interested in learning Embedded Programming.

I've been waiting for this book for years!

Android is a nearly perfect system to use for small hardware projects. Whether you are a Maker, building a project for Single-board computer or an entrepeneur with a product for the burgeoning IoC market, there couldn't be a better OS than Android. Unfortunately, until now, there has been only one book for developers looking to embed Android on a new device, Karim Yaghmour's excellent "Embedded Android".
Roger Ye's "Embedded Programming with Android" is the perfect prequil. It addresses an incredibly difficult topic: bootstrapping new hardware. The book manages to divide the subject -- intrinsically specific to the particular target tool-chain and hardware -- into several manageable and generalizable steps. The hands-on exercises make clever use of Android's QEMU emulator and lay out the process of taking hardware from bare metal, to running bootloader.
Make no mistake, bringing up new hardware is not for the faint of heart. This is not a beginner's book. Even an experienced developer with some experience programming close to hardware will have to use some ingenuity to work through the exercises. Working through them, however is a huge step towards porting Android to your own board.

A must read for the computer engineer interested in getting started with embedded development

If you want to get into embedded development this is a primer. It assumes that you have a some knowledge of computer architecture, assembly, C, and gnu tool chain experience. In the beginning the author walks you through all the tools he will be using, and a brief explanation of why he uses those tools. There isn't much in the way of walking you through installation and configuration of the development tools. But if you need that there is always plenty of information on the internet.

Sometimes it is hard just to know where to start when you want to get into a new field. This book answers it.

'The Errant Prince'

Even in a fantasy world, people have certain ideas of appropriate behavior. Myron and Tamsen, of 'The Errant Prince' by Sasha L. Miller, are viewed for who they appear to be rather than who they are. Myron and Tamsen have cleverly found a way to overcome the roadblocks other people try to put in their paths; they've learned to shine in their own way and are determined to continue to do so together, with any luck.

One of Myron's strong points is that he never underestimates the challenges that lie before him. When he's assigned to bring back a prince who has forsaken his royalty, he approaches the task with eyes wide open. Myron doesn't assume that just because Tamsen is a prince he will behave like one, and this assumption proves to be correct. Instead of trying to use force, Myron takes his time and earns Tamsen's respect. Since Myron doesn't behave like the other soldiers who have come to drag the prince back home, Tamsen is more prone to listen to him. As their mutual respect grows, Myron and Tamsen learn that they have a lot more in common that they first thought. This forms another bond which helps move them from potential captor and prisoner to friendship and the possibility for more.

Tamsen runs away from his princely duties seeking a more simple life, away from the crushing expectations of his position and an ex-lover determined to marry him, not because of love, but for the prestige it will give him. Tamsen is much more capable than his brother, the king, presents him to be. Tamsen is tired of being told what he can and can't do and how he is supposed to feel. He's quite resourceful both in magic and in the daily tasks necessary for survival. Tamsen likes his solitude, but he is lonely. When Myron comes around, Tamsen thinks that he is like all of the other inept men his brother has sent to talk sense into him and bring Tamsen home; but soon realizes Myron is so much more. The night before they leave, it's obvious that their affection for each other is something they both want to explore further, but they also know when Tamsen is back at the castle, things will change drastically regardless of what he wants.

This is a sweet love story, told in a fairy-tale style, which adds interest, color, and magic to the mix. Tamsen and Myron are both strong, admirable characters whose affection is tangible. There isn't any huge conflict in the story, but there was enough political intrigue to hold my interest. If you like magic, princes, castles, court politics, pushing limits, and, of course, love, then you may enjoy reading this story.

Short, sweet and lovely

I loved this little novella. It’s a sweet, easy read with a couple of likable characters in a lovely fantasy setting. Myron is great – a soldier sent out to fetch home a spoilt brat of a prince, but what he finds when he finally tracks Tamsen down is definitely not what he’s expecting. Far from the pampered little princeling of rumour, Tamsen instead lives alone right out in the country in a small cottage with a large herb garden. The last thing he wants to do is leave his home and return to the city, but Myron is not like the other men who’ve been sent to track the prince down. Instead he’s calm, patient and willing to work in exchange for being taught new spells.

I loved how much Myron baffled Tamsen. He’s so easy going, he rarely gets upset and when he does it’s every bit as surprising as all the times he let stuff go. He’s so centered and sure of himself, despite all the problems he’s had with his parents and his woeful magical education. I loved his curiosity and the way he treats Tamsen as a person, not a prince, and how he goes after what he wants in such a patient, steady way without any pressure.

The story is split into two halves – the first is from Myron’s pov as he tracks Tamsen down and tries to convince him to go home, the second is all Tamsen as he tries to sort out his life. I really liked getting to see inside both their heads and how they viewed the other, though I would have liked more Myron time towards the end.

Mixing a bit of court politics in with love, status and personal identity as well as the high cost of family acceptance, this book is a real delight. There’s nothing explicit in it at all, beyond some kisses and flirting and a lot of blushing on Tamsen’s part. He might start off as starchy and rude, but by the end I loved him. He’s socially awkward but actually really sweet, and the way he approaches his relationship with Myron is adorable. I am jealous of his cottage and garden, though.

Short, sweet and lovely, I will definitely be reading this one again. If you like magic, love, a tiny bit of political machinations and a couple of characters who are perfect for each other, then you should enjoy this. The fact that it also included a trans character was pure icing on the cake. I’ll be looking out for more from this author.

I got this book through Booklending and read through it quickly in a day - it's a very fast read. For such a short book, a disproportionate amount of text is spent on teaching magic versus developing a relationship. I think it's Ms. Miller's writing style that relationships just seem to happen with little explanation or background (a smile, a look, and then, bam, the characters are fully committed to each other). Why Tamsen ran away was rather weak, to me. This isn't a book I would re-read as there just isn't any deeper character traits to ponder as I read it a second time. The gender non-conforming issue apparently wasn't an issue for anyone, which was at least interesting.

Stanley J. Ward serves as the Biblical Worldview director at the Brook Hill School in Bullard, TX. His education includes a BA from Oklahoma Baptist University, a MDIV from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and additional graduate studies in both Biblical languages and the Humanities. He is currently a PhD candidate at Dallas Baptist University, writing about how leaders can use stories to help followers internalize values.

A focus on what is often missing from the worldview discussion

Many worldview books--or books on Christian apologetics--focus heavily on attacking the "opponent's" worldview. They point out the deficiencies in various worldviews that contradict the Christian faith and offer ways to address, or rather, attack, these deficiencies. There is certainly a place for this in the field of Christian apologetics and I am thankful for such fine treatments of the subject by writers like Cornelius Van Til, Greg Bahnsen, John Frame, Gary DeMar, Douglas Wilson, etc. Christians are bombarded with attacks from intellectuals to television pundits to the man on the street. We need to know and be reminded of the solid intellectual and philosophical strength of our worldview.

However, what many of the worldview/apologetics books overlook is that it takes a listening ear to hear what our opposition is saying. Furthermore, in our zeal to win over souls by nearly combative evangelism, we often forget that we are sharing the gospel with people--fellow human beings. (Yeah, I know; many who oppose Christians are anything but civil and some treat us as if we're less than human.)

Stanley J. Ward's book reminds us that when we share the gospel, we are dealing with fellow human beings. Yes, he encourages readers to know their faith and faith story, but he also gives some helpful reminders about human communication and the skill of listening. Evangelism is about winning souls, but the job of conversion belongs to the Holy Spirit. Ward explains that we ought to focus on the conversation (which he describes as a process that occurs over the course of several discussions), and leave the conversions to the Holy Spirit.

This does not mean that Ward soft hands the conflict that often occurs between believer and unbeliever. He just chooses to focus on the communication process so that meaningful conversations can take place... and continue over time. He's not saying that all evangelism is "friendship evangelism," but he is certainly saying that we interact with non-believers in a friendly manner.

This book is a short, readable, and honest addition to the ever-growing catalog of books on worldview. Ward allows us brief glimpses into his own journey as a Christ-follower and a sharer of the gospel by including "conversations" that he's had with students at the school where he teaches. Along the way, we see that he has grown into the conversational approach--and it hasn't always been pretty. If we take heed to his argument about focusing more on the conversations we can have with unbelievers and less on worrying so about converting them, then his book serves its purpose.

I give the book four stars because while I agree with Ward's conversational approach, I think more information on addressing specific worldviews would be helpful. Still, he does include a good annotated bibliography of various worldview books for further study. I suspect that a companion volume that helps address the nuances and beliefs of various worldviews is in the works.

Great resource, especially for young adults and new adult Christians

Worldview Conversations, the latest project from Stanley J. Ward, Bible Chairperson and Worldview Director for The Brook Hill School in Bullard, TX, is a welcome addition in Christian apologetics. Far too often, we learn how to defend the faith with reason, logic, and facts. Far too rarely do we learn how to do so under the precepts of I Peter 3:15, "with gentleness and respect" (ESV).

Soon-to-be-Doctor Ward gives us practical advice about holding conversations with non-Christians. His methods focus on understanding and compassion, not on "scoring points" or "winning" arguments. He deftly explains the important difference between the "conversion" approach and the "conversation" approach.

This volume is peppered with vignettes which illustrate his personal experiences developing and employing his method. These stories show real-world examples of success and failure of various approaches, and show us all how we can better view our friends and acquaintances.

I would suggest this should be on every Christian leader's bookshelf, especially those who deal with people between the ages of 12 and 25. I would further suggest that "Conversations" classes should be developed by local church congregations to help us all implement the wisdom which came from Stanley Ward's experiences. Lastly, I would suggest those who study this book also load the Napkin Theology videos, also from Dr. Ward, onto their mobile devices for quick and easy illustration when in discussion with non-Christians.

Worldview Conversations is a great book. It is clear, clean, concise, clever, and cogent. It took me deeper into life. I highly recommend it.

No real plot, no coherent story

There actually isn't really a plot. I've like Ciff Simack's other books, for the most part, but this one is just unfocused. A bunch of barely related things happen to some moderately interesting characters, but there is no coherence to it at all, nor does it really have much of a dénouement. There is not plot LINE as such, and really, no resolution in the ending.

This story has so many quirky embellishments piled seemingly one on top of the other.

Shakespeare's Planet by Clifford D. Simak [1904-88], published in 1966, is a strangely mesmerizing novel. An interstellar exploration ship makes landfall on an "earth-like' planet after a thousand year space expedition. Carter Horton, one of three crewmembers, is awakened from "cold-sleep" only to find himself the only survivor, his crewmates having perished due to a malfunction during the long voyage. Upon being revived he is greeted by a robot whose first words are "I am Nicodemus". The robot with the particularly curious name has the bewildering ability to acquire specific skills - geology-physician-biochemist and others by utilization of various transmogs - biochemical brains. The ship itself is "guided' by three incorporeal entities who were, when "in the flesh" a scientist with limited social skills, an admired monk who lost his faith and a dizzy social climbing matron. The entities can communicate with Horton by some sort of "mind talk" which thankfully is not elaborated upon in the book. The entities engages in lively chats, deliberations and arguments "off stage" to the plot. Awaiting Horton at the ship's open door is a repulsive looking alien creature who speaks English and calls himself Carnivore. He arrived on the plant via a one way "time tunnel" along with a human, Shakespeare. Shakespeare, we are told by Carnivore, had an illness that took his life. He insisted that Carnivore eat him after he died - which he did. Around sunset of his first day Horton experiences the "god-hour" -a frightening out of body trance-like state. Carnivore informs him that it come to pass every day around the same time. Now, some very strange things start to happen.

This story has so many quirky embellishments piled seemingly one on top of the other I find myself at a lost to list them all. Suffice to say this is not a typical 1960's science-fiction novel.

Without sounding too pompous I can state that I have read all of Simak's 26 novels and, in my opinion, found this one among his better novels. Nonetheless I would not recommend it to readers new to Simak - just too "far out" and I suspect would turn off individuals from reading his other books. Then again I could be completely wrong on this point.

An introduction to fascinating species and characters, and no more...

Shakespeare's Planet introduces the reader to a number of characters and species that could be the central part of future books by Clifford Simak. But as far as I know, they are not.

Ship: three human minds slowly evolving into a consciousness greater than the sum of the three.

Horton: a geologist by training, he knows he is 1000 years removed from the rest of humanity because of the cold-sleep while traveling.

Elayne: an explorer by nature, she is mapping the tunnels throughout the galaxy.

Carnivore: a species dedicated to being the supreme predator.

Nicodemus: a robotic AI with an apparent consciousness.

Pond: I'm still not sure what Pond is, but a single entity scattered throughout the galaxy.

Evil Thing: Not too powerful that Carnivore can't handle. With apologies to Ripley in Aliens, who laid the egg?

Dragon Thing: another strange species, encased in a cocoon of ... time?

Slugs: builders or maintainers of the galactic tunnels.

Shakespeare: with the influence of Pond, is Shakespeare really dead?

As a story, Shakespeare's Planet is uneven and feels unfinished. However, the focus of the story is on its strangeness. I can envision Iain M. Banks being inspired to write his Culture books after reading Shakespeare's Planet.

The issue of humans meeting again after a gap of 1000+ years is also explored in 3001 The Final Odyssey and Spin, among other books.
