Does not cover some key topics in sufficient detail

Contains a lot of useful stuff but the sections in chapter 18 on protected mode operation was too short and the accompanying diagrams were a bit skimpy. Having said that, the example code was useful. There was no hard data on virtual 8086 mode and the paging mechanism which is a key feature on 80386 and subsequent processors. Information on how Windows uses the later processors' segmentation, task switching and paging features was notable by its absence. I wish I could find a book that covers this material.

This intriguing work reenvisions the time-honored tale of midnight magic as a strand of narrative poems. Beginning with Cinderella in her old age, first-time author Whipple gives voice to the cast of characters, from the remorseful father, now a ghost, to the unrepentantly greedy, grasping stepmother (Ah, rich, rich, rich. I love the rhythm of rich!), and stepsisters (While we're dancing, sleep in ashes and brush the soot from off your lashes). Readers hear from the fairy godmother and the royal family as well, including the besotted prince (Wait! Who's that? Smile like moonbeams on a splashing spring). Whipple renders moments of melancholy (Father comes to my dreams, though he is gone. ... It seems right to dry tears with sackcloth and ashes says Cinderella) as fully as comic touches (e.g., the rat-turned-coachman cries, Where was my tail, long and slim, a-switching? Totally gone! Just a memory of motion) even the glass slipper gets a turn (I grieve for the glow of my mate). This fresh, engaging presentation of the Cinderella story unfolds like a lyric opera. Larded with wit, the volume returns to Cinderella, who offers up a sage gem: The music of true Magic sang only that once for me. After, I had to compose the music of my life. Beingessner alternates small inset portraits and vignettes with full-spread paintings of the godmother's gifts and the climactic moment at the ball; her swirling line and color conjure up the story's magical setting. Grade 3-6-An imaginative extension of the classic fairy tale and an interesting examination of point of view. In 33 poems, readers hear from the evil stepmother, the prince, the fairy godmother, the ghost of Cinderella's father-even the rat who becomes the coachman. Cinderella herself begins and ends the book. In the prelude, she speaks as an elderly woman. "I remember the voices of my young life/like melodies on sheets of song/long stored in a dusty box./I bring some out for you." Whipple finds story and emotion in unlikely places. For example, each of Cinderella's shoes speaks ("I was born for dancing/and the warmth of small feet"). Each one pines to be reunited with the other in a way that reflects the prince's search for Cinderella. The smooth writing has a relaxed, conversational flow. Luminous gouache paintings use soft, clear colors and flowing lines to present scenes in an attractive and traditional way. This book has excellent potential for classroom use, both for creative-writing activities and for reading aloud. It will also be enjoyed by children who simply love the story. It's satisfying to see a fresh take on a European folktale that isn't a parody. Gwen Strauss's Trail of Stones (Knopf, 1990; o.p.) also treats folktales poetically, but is for an older audience and covers several different stories rather than just one.

Gr. 5-8. It's difficult to imagine a good reason to add another treatment of Cinderella, but Whipple shows that there's always room for a new perspective. In this version the characters tell the story in blank verse. Cinderella reveals her grief over her father's death, and readers look through her eyes to see how her stepmother convinced her that "Bare feet, coarse clothes / show mourning." She is drawn gradually into poverty and servitude, but her fairy godmother keeps a close eye on her, as readers find out in "Messenger Cat": "Cat is messenger. / Cat is spy. / Cat is angel. / Cat is Cat." The story unfolds just as it always does, but the multiple points of view--from Cinderella's to the prince's to the rat's to the queen's-- enlarge and enrich the familiar tale to win a more sophisticated audience. The poems can't stand alone, but together they make a satisfying whole. Paintings by Beingessner achieve just the right mixture of sorrow, beauty, and humor. Susan Dove Lempke

I love this book!

I love Laura Whipple's vibrant retelling of the Cinderella story. It's fresh, new and full of ryhthmic enchantment from the cat ("cat is master; cat is cat") to the glass slipper pining for its mate, to the wary rat who becomes a coachman ("where were my whiskers, a-twitching, a-tremble?") The book begs to be read aloud - even sung - alone or in a group. The ending, in which Cinderella addresses her audience, brought tears to my eyes. It told me, "This is not only Cinderella's story, it is yours." Laura Beingessner's accompanying illustrations are as full of magic as the text. All in all, this book is a winner.

I came across this book the other day on a book shelf; the cover was interesting so I picked it up. I was so impressed ! I love poetry. It brought to light aspects about the Cinderella saga that I only wondered about as a child. The prince's mother's reaction to this "Cinders-girl"; the sad ghost of Ella's father wandering about with no rest; the deep hurt and jealousy of the step mother; all was just so wonderful. The poetry and heart of L. Whipple really brought this story to life. I actually cried when I read it. The pictures were superb, I especially love the picture of the rat/coachman and his tale.
The garden cat and his telepathic communication with "The Magic-she" (fairy godmother) was divinely esoteric. The rhythm flowed well and the thoughts were unique. I have to say that this book is a real enchantment. If you like poetry, if your children know the story of Cinderella but you would like to give them a bit of reading to ponder upon, get this book. It's a good adult read as well, for both men and women. This is a wonderful book for any library. Thanks Laura Whipple and artist Laura Beingessner for making the world a better place to live with your wonderful talents.

Enchanting Retelling of Cinderella through Poetry

This book of poetry is, in a word, beautiful from start to finish. The illustrations are breathtaking, and have the look and texture of an oil-painting, which I really enjoy.

The book takes you through the story of Cinderella by utilizing poetry as a way for each character to make their voice heard. In addition to odes to Cinderella and her fair Prince, there are also poems from the jealous and covetous evil step-mother, as well as a hauntingly sad poem from the ghost of Cinderella's father, who mourns the day he made the mistake of bringing her step-mother into their lives.

Fairy-tale lovers and collectors will enjoy adding this beautiful book of poetry, dedicated to one of the most beloved fairy tales of all time, to their extensive collections. Others will enjoy it for the uniqueness and warmth it gives to the tale of "Cinderella".

Fun to read but super short

The "book" is composed by 3 essays. The first one is the longest while the second one is the shortest (about 1.5 pages). While the first two essays are really fun to read and I could relate very well to them, i felt the third one was just a repetition of the ideas already written in the first ones. I just felt it to be kind of a filler.

When I finished I just wanted it to be longer and talk about other topics that men encounter throughout their lives. If you want to spend 3 bucks for a 20min reading go ahead but I think there would be lengthier readings for the same price.

With a juicy title and a black cover I thought I was buying something scandalous. While I did enjoy reading the book because it was so relatable and funny, I felt like it was any article I read for free on thought catalog. You do help a young writer out by buying this but being a broke college student myself I think I'll pass on the rest of their online books.

seems to me this book should be read by straights as well as gays. it will open everybody's eyes to aspects of gay sex facts that (I suspect) not even the hardest hitting of gay activists is aware of.well written, and in a breezy, train of consciousness, approach.easy to read and full of detail.

About the Author

Joanna Shapland is Edward Bramley Professor of Criminal Justice in the University of Sheffield and Director of the Centre for Criminological Research. She was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by the British Society of Criminology in 2013 and is Executive Editor of the International Review of Victimology.

Stephen Farrall is Professor of Criminology in the Centre for Criminological Research at the University of Sheffield. Stephen also edits the International Series on Desistance and Rehabiliation (published by Routledge).

Anthony Bottoms is Emeritus Wolfson Professor of Criminology in the University of Cambridge and Honorary Professor of Criminology in the University of Sheffield. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy. With Joanna Shapland, he co-directs the Sheffield Desistance Study.

A concise and practical guide to the backyard entrepreneur

Despite the title, this is a well written book, a balanced mix between a story and
a practical guide on how to build something successful starting with almost nothing.
It's a short easy and well organized text, capable of transmitting in the reader all the excitement
of the initiative of two young entrepreneurs.
A story, detailed in all its passages, that lead through a fresh idilic mindset dealing on how people could
afford the problems that arouse in the real world trying to succeed in create something.
Funny and inspiring at the same time.
