About the Author
Amin Rida is research assistant in the GEDC-Georgia Electronic Design Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from that same school. He is a member of the IEEE. Manos Tentzeris is an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical and computer science from the University of Michigan. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

Book or PhD thesis?

The book reads more like a PhD thesis than the survey that its title implies.
I was hoping for a survey of where RFID was being used in sensor applications, what chips and antenna designs are available and how systems are being put together by practitioners across a range of applications. It did not fulfill that goal. Instead it provided a nuts and bolts description of antenna design and characterization in the UHF band.
After a few introductory chapters, there are very detailed descriptions of particular aspects of particular projects.
Chapter 1 is 13 pages on ID methods, covering everything from bar codes to proximity cards and RFID.
Chapter 2 is 21 pages on "Fundamentals and Operating Principles for RFID". This is the best chapter for the general technical reader.
Chapter 3 has 10 pages on sensors, ranging from thermocouples to the large hadron collider at CERN.
Then the thesis work begins.
Chapter 4 has a 37 page section describing the design and characterization of several specific antennas.
That section is followed by 10 pages on system design (which omits details such as what microprocessor was used).
Then it's back to another 22 pages of antenna characterization.
Chapter 5 has about 10 pages on research type fabrication methods, including inkjet tag printing and carbon nanotubes for gas detection. Then there is, you guessed it, another 15-17 pages on antenna characterization on different substrates.
The book has its merits. It is clearly written and when it reviews subjects it is effective at condensing a wealth of information to a few pithy points.
