completely rubbish book

The book is not published in 2012 as Amazon said, in fact, in 1986. Its content is out of date. The figures are blurred and the legends can not be seen. It seems like a pirate copy downloaded from network. Although the price is very cheap, please DO NOT buy it from Amazon.

Book we got with this ISBN lacks publisher, may be older edition

Our library ordered "The Science of Fingerprints: classification and Uses" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, ISBN 9781619491366. Amazon indicates this title was published by Empire Books, in December 2011.

However, the book we received lacks a publisher name, imprint page, date of publication, and seems to leave out all mention of 21st-century computer databases for tracking and filing fingerprints. (I found Chapter 8 in the 2002 edition dealt with computer databases, but the Chapter 8 in our received copy is titled "How to Take Inked Fingerprints.")

I believe this copy is NOT the one advertised and may be a public-domain reprint of an older edition, as some do seem to be available at Project Gutenberg.

Amazon, it would be helpful if you listed contents, so we cataloging librarians could more easily determine if we've received the correct edition of a title.

About the Author
Abdel Bari Atwan is a Palestinian writer and journalist. He was the editor in chief at the London-based daily al-Quds al-Arabi for twenty-five years and now edits the Rai al-Youm news website—the Arab world's first Huffington Post–style outlet. He is a regular contributor to a number of publications, including the Guardian and the Scottish Herald, and he is a frequent guest on radio and television, often appearing on the BBC's Dateline London.

Atwan interviewed Osama bin Laden twice in the late 1990s and has cultivated uniquely well-placed sources within the various branches of al Qaeda and other jihadi groups, including IS, over the last twenty years. His books include The Secret History of al Qaeda and After bin Laden: Al Qaeda, the Next Generation, as well as a memoir, A Country of Words: A Palestinian Journey from the Refugee Camp to the Front Page.

The Best Book on the Islamic State

With the appearance of the Islamic State (or ISIS, ISIL, IS, ISI, or Deash) — this is how they want to be known and this is how the author refers to them — there have been a plethora of books on the subject. These books cover the political spectrum, and they vary greatly in informational value.

This is the best book on the Islamist State for one reason: It strives to be, and largely succeeds in being, one of the most objective accounts of this group.

The Islamic State is a digital caliphate. What sets them apart from other terrorist groups is their technological know-how. They skillfully navigate the back channels of the dark internet to recruit soldiers, obtain financing, move money, conduct cyber-intelligence, or hack internet or bank accounts. Without the internet, Atwan tells us, the Islamic State could not exist.

This book introduces us to the shadowy world of international terrorism and crime and is more powerful than any book of fiction. The IS has media savvy and an incredible technological knowledge of the internet. They know how to propagate their views to produce the greatest effect to the largest number of people. The immolation of the Jordanian airpilot was a good example. The brutality of the airman’s death shocked both the Western and Islamic world and was their way of saying using shock and awe methods that they are in the Middle East to stay.

While the subtitle indicates that they are the digital caliphate, a good part of the book, perhaps one third, concerns the origins of the Islamic State. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the United States is responsible for creating the IS when it completely destabilized Iraq following its invasion. According to Atwan this is only partially correct. Other factors such as the civil war in Syria and internal strive within Muslim jihadists contributed to the birth of IS.

The main promoter of the Islamic State, the author tells us, is our most intimate, stable, ally in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, who consistently and regularly funnels millions of dollars, not only to the IS, but to other terrorist groups.

This book contains real information. The Islamic State has displayed a savagery, ferocity, and brutality that has shocked both the West and the Middle East. But the Islamic State is not just an ad-hoc bunch of unruly thugs. For all intents and purposes, the Islamic State is a de facto nation state. The territory under IS control covers the area greater than that of Great Britain and over 9 million people. It issues its own currency; it revived the monetary unit of the Mediaeval Caliphate, the golden dinar. It issues passports; requires vehicles within its territory to display Islamic State license plates; has its own flag, and coat of arms. Islamic State soldiers even have their own salute; ironically, it is the same salute Sasha Baron Cohen’s character used in The Dictator — the right index finger pointing upwards. The IS areas have a working postal system and a functional governmental and judicial system.

It has a treasury with millions and millions of dollars. Widespread news accounts indicated that when IS besieged Mosul, the Iraqi national troops fled and left an enormous cache of cash, one-half billion — that’s a “b” — dollars, and military equipment. Atwan relates that this year the IS published its first annual budget: $2 billion.

Areas under IS control have a functional governmental It is particularly ironic that in an area of incredible internal instability, law and order reign — if not under the constant threat and implementation of Sharia law — in areas controlled by the Islamic State. IS has taken control of oil fields and sell the oil on the open market, collecting the revenues from the confiscated fields.

This book is helpful even for news junkies such as this reviewer, to explain the dire situation in the Middle East and clarify the sometimes confusing inter-connections between the terrorist groups.

The author coherently explains what is going on with the highly organized and well-funded Islamist State and how it contrasts with the efforts of Al Quaeda which revolved mostly around the leadership of one man, Osama Bin Laden. The author gives great background on why this region has coalesced against the West in a determination to restore self-rule under the 18th Century puritanical ideology of Wahabism, and why they are utilizing savagery to gain recruits, adherents and to spread fear in an effort to sabotage economies in regions heavily subsidized by tourism. He also gives excellent advice on what is needed to restore a semblance of civility in what has more and more been recognized as essentially a civil war between Sunni and the Shiite religious authority. It is not through invasion, occupation and force of arms, but through education, and an understanding of the region's diversity of religious groups and how to assist them in living together as is done in the West, that will ultimately bring a sense of stability to this region. The use of social media which is instantaneous and easily accessed is now uniting adherents of an Islamic state, and the visceral imagery of terrorist attacks helps to spread their message of fear and intolerance.

This is close to a must-read, an excellent and scary account of a wily and formidable movement.

This is a difficult book to evaluate because the author, a well known journalist, has drawn a vast amount of information from many informants via interviews and internet contacts, but does not name them because of extreme danger to the informants. So, crediting the book depends on the reader's trust in the author. It rings true to me.

The book should scare hell out of most readers. Islamic State (this is the way Atwan refers to it) is well-organized, well-financed, ruthless and has generated commitment and loyalty from Muslims from all over the world. Al-Baghdadi, the leader and self-proclaimed Caliph has been accepted as that by sizable numbers of people. He is, if Atwan is correct, charismatic, smart and ruthless, and as able at leadership as he is at theology. Islamic State is fare more dangerous than previous terror groups. Now, about that word "terror." Terror is a method, not an end in itself; these people are not nihilists who love violence for violence's sake. Violence generates attention in world media, vast publicity and contributes to the reputation of formidable ferocity. Islamic State is a state, controlling 240,000 square miles and 6 million people, issuing license plates, having its own coinage and an extremely sophisticated internet presence. The vision is plain, to recreate the glory days of the original Caliphate which ruled from Spain to Central Asia; and Mecca and Medina are on the list. This is ambitious, and terror is a useful tactic.

Atwan's various chapters can be read on their own. He describes the background, including crucial information about the early Caliphate and 20th century history of Iraq. The initial chapters delineate the digital aspect, and do so extremely well; this is close to must-read. Islamic State appears to be holding its own in cyberspace and to represent extreme danger to operating systems for everything from drones to power grids. This book had some of the most interesting characters I have read in a long time. I read a lot of the same genre of novels (I really should branch out, but eh), and a lot of characters get lost in the story. By that I mean, making sure that the story is thrilling and has no plotholes, and ensuring that the story is keeping the reader reading, but in turn, letting characterization fall to the wayside. (Does that make sense?)

No, in When Life Hands You a Lemon, you're immersed into a world of complicated, flawed characters. A contemporary world where the main character, Dan Lemon, has his meticulous routine ruined when he's taken hostage and he has to face the music: he might die. And with that, he battles with his past, his present, whether he has a future.

The novel is a wonderful insight into Dan Lemon's mind. By the end, you feel like you know this man and all of his quirks. You sympathize with him. You feel his pain. And that is commendable writing.

If I had one complaint about this novel as a whole, there is a LOT of dialogue. Which is fine! There's nothing wrong with that at all! However, sometimes, when three or four people were taking part in a conversation, I found myself lost as to who was talking. Every once in awhile wouldn't have bothered me, but I found myself rereading sections of dialogue pretty often and I think it took away from the book.

And then ending. Ohhh the ending. I LOVE IT. Without risking spoiling any part of it, I will just say that it is perfect. You will turn the page, but it will be over, and you will sit and just reflect on this novel for awhile.

It makes you think about your own life and how you spend everyday. Do you have the same routine? Or do you live life on the edge? Dan Lemon and his ordeal will make you take a look at in the mirror and consider if you're doing your life justice.

The Stranger

I met Mike (and his wife) a few years ago in the left field bleachers, during my annual father/daughter pilgrimage to Wrigley Field. We met a second time in those same bleachers a year later. On one of several beer runs, he mentioned that he was a "writer". The look on my face was I'm sure the same one he displayed when I said I was a high school Accounting teacher back in Tennessee. We must have been convincing enough to each other to keep in contact and I look forward to seeing my friend, "the writer" at Wrigley for years to come.
I was drawn into the story of Dan Lemon on several fronts--I am about the age of Dan, I identified with his "hum-drum" daily routines, and recognized the existentialism of the plot that I hadn't read since Camus. I have, and will, encourage others to read this book as it is unique. There are some very deep passages that I found myself being very introspective, but also a nice balance of dick, fart and titty humor that pulled me back from the ledge! Great read, can't wait for more!

While the main character’s issues are greater than most men of my generation, the problems he suffers from are real. The male characters in this novel are a true study of what has become of men today. On one side you have men who have lost the ability to be good and are either dirty or cruel in response. On the other side the main character has given up any edge and succumbed to the pressure to not offend anyone or break any rules. This book is not only entertaining, but thought provoking and could be used by sociologist to better grasp the current state of the American male. Even though the main character’s issues started early in life, many men should be able to relate to his current predicament of being trapped into a schedule and a set of rules that is self-imposed as much as dropped on him by society.
I could say more, but I’m still digesting this novel and expect to be for some time.

Is it possible to give ZERO stars? The best thing about this book is the ideal of this book-a handbook to turn mere mortals like you and me into Harvey Spector from the USA Network show SUITS. At least it's a cool idea. The second best thing about this book is its cover. There is nothing else positive about this book beyond its concept and its cover. I didn't really expect a life-changing volume but for $8.00 I did expect something more that a book probably written in under three hours and totally devoid of any wit or creativity or useful advice. I suggest that you do not purchase this book. Somebody wants to cash in on the popularity of SUITS--and that's fine with me-- but this worthless book does a great miservice to a great TV show.

Todd is an educator with a BA in Earth Science Education and a Master of Science in Physics Education. He has over 14 years of experience in teaching. He has taught math, computer skills, physical science, geology, astronomy, chemistry, and physics. His favorite topic to teach is Quantum Mechanics. His desire to teach his daughters on how to make paracord bracelets led to his knowledge of paracord.

This is a great book for BEGINNERS and people already making paracord bracelets. The author has a Master's in Education with a Physics emphasis. He has also been teaching for 14 years. This book can take difficult concepts and make them seem effortless. It is similar to the way professional athletes make their sporting events look simple.

This book shows you how to finish a bracelet with a buckle, without having to singe the paracord to the edge of the bracelet. A singed edge looks horrible! Thanks to this book, I know how to finish a paracord bracelet with a clean look. This book shows how to tie off the paracord and hide it comfortably on the inside of the bracelet. I would recommend it for your local libraries and scouting projects, because Paracord 101 helps you quickly make these fun and popular bracelets.

Poorly illustrated

I have tied several of the knots in this book prior to receiving it. I was disappointed in that the illustrations are difficult to follow due to the color schemes used. Why anyone would try to teach a knotting technique using patterned paracord and poor color choices is beyond me.

This book will get a beginner tying bracelets, but they may have to struggle a bit to get the knots right because of the poor illustrations.

It is a very complete book. It provides a detailed description of both extended database models and knowledge representation techniques, and how they can be integrated.

too "smart"

I bought this book for my project and I thought, that it going help me, with new ideas on design on Database System. It didn't help at all I spend 2 hours on reading of that and didn't found any thing new for me.
This book will be really good for those people who are working on PHD in Computer Science.
If you programmer you don't need that, stay out, don't waist your time to reed this book. I am really absent because I waist my time. O yes one more I count the pages that authors spends on References - 36 pages
O Wow We got a "winner" from 450 pages only 36 on reference. After that I got just one question to authors did they get after this book PHD in Computer Science? I think they got it.
Don't Waist your time and money to bay this book.

How to fall in love with reading indeed!

137 Books in One Year is an easy-to-read, inviting, smart guide to getting into the groove of reading from a writer who provides 10 terrific tips.

As a long-time voracious reader (and author), I especially appreciate how Hendricks addresses every possible barrier to falling in love with reading, providing practical advice for getting past all of them. Love that he includes my personal favorite,"If You Don't Like It, Stop." This showed up in a delightful section called "Read What You Like." (So grateful to know I'm not alone in being unable to plow through Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton!)

Kevin Hendricks loves to read and wants you to love it, too. If you're reading this, you probably already love reading, but surely you know people who don't and think nothing of announcing, "I hate reading." Give them this booklet as a gift!

Delightful and very helpful!

Just what I needed to read to get myself excited about reading again, logging this in as my first completed book of the new year! I read it over the course of 2 days, employing some of the techniques described in the book, such as keeping the PDF open on my computer screen so i could read whenever I had a few free minutes (i.e. waiting on hold on the phone). I also appreciated the references of so many books throughout, adding more and more to my "to-read" shelf (I already have a couple "next books" picked out!) Great job Kevin!

This is not a speed reading course...

As Kevin states in his introduction, this is not a speed reading course...it's a simple collection of tips, ideas and practical ways to help you read more. The ten (plus) tips that he offers here do just that...give you tips and motivation to help you more richly enjoy the fun of reading.

It is easy to see Kevin's love of books as he writes with passion. Each chapter is a quick-read (so you can get on with tackling your reading list) and chock full of practical advice. And, this book would be worth the price if it only included the information in the appendices. Highly recommended!
