Some Good, Some Bad

I've got a '03 V6 (not super charged). I got this really as reference to help a buddy and me replace my timing belt (he's all but a professional mechanic) and am planning on figuring out what maintenance I can do on my own. This book has left me with a complete 50/50 feeling. It covers such a broad range of years, as most after market manuals do, that I found my Frontier to be just a little different than what's described in the book. It's definitely gotten me through some jobs but has also left me standing and scratching my head. It's a good starting point but I would recommend walking through every project comparing the book to your actual truck as best you can before starting anything. Despite what other reviews have said, I wouldn't tear down and rebuild my truck with this, but, combined with forums and blogs online, it's good too have.
Compared to the Haynes, I'd get the Chilton.

Good starting point with lots of useful information

As most of you know, this is not a substitute for an OEM factory manual. Since most of these Chilton's and Haynes manuals cover multiple vehicles, the steps and part locations listed in the text do not always reflect what you'll be looking at in your own garage. If your automotive knowledge is limited to changing fluids, spark plugs, air filters and maybe even brakes, I don't recommend trying to rebuild your engine with only this manual. However, it's great to have around and can get you through a good majority of the general repairs that will need to be performed on your vehicle during the time you own it.

Chilton Manel for 1998 to 2004 pickups

I would highly recommend this product to any one with a Nissan pickup from 1998 to 2004. Manual covers all small to large repairs with not only step by step information to do it, but also picture to picture instructions as well, for those with little to no experience in the field. I've purchased the more expensive manuals to find they cover less repairs, and are geared more to someone who already knows the basics. In the real world most people don't, so I would purchase this one, repairs will be easy and cheap as they should be. :0)

Julie Compton's titillating 'Tell No Lies' sequel is the quintessential legal thriller

Four years ago in TELL NO LIES, charismatic St. Louis prosecutor Jack Hilliard "betrayed Claire and his family, a shadow that followed him wherever he went." He had a one-night fling with fellow attorney, Jenny Dodson, an alluring person of Indian derivation and astounding beauty.

Now, Jack catches 16-year-old son Michael 'getting busy' with Celeste, Jenny's doppelgänger. Michael gets into the booze cabinet, and is in no condition to drive 'Cee' home. Jack, hoping to earn his oldest son's respect after the marital booboo, keeps the alcohol and sex a secret from Claire, and takes teen Celeste home--alone. Big mistake! Cee begs Jack to let her sober up in his car for a few hours. Jack had vowed to tell no lies, but "The lies aren't what he says; they're what he doesn't say. And this is when he makes his third mistake." Strike three. Celeste alleges rape, and a DNA conundrum casts doubt about Jack's credibility. Ah, Jack, as Claire says, "Have you learned nothing?"

Coincidentally, Jenny approaches Jack after a four-year absence, and "sends a wave of heat through his body like an addict's first hit after a long abstinence." She asks Jack for help with threatening letters. Who sent them, and why? Her former boyfriend, Alex, was convicted of murdering Maxine, and Jenny can't be charged again. But an appellate court may set Alex free, which will put Jenny's neck in a noose--metaphorically--and on death row, for sure. Everything Jenny did "had nothing to do with her feelings for him and everything to do with creating the perfect alibi."

Unanswered questions in 'Lies' now haunt Jack during intense courtroom drama. Presumed guilty parties are innocent, or are they? Tables turn like a tornado, as readers become quasi jurors assessing validity of life's prosecution and defense. It is, I feel, essential to read TELL NO LIES before taking on this challenging sequel.

The creative present tense omniscient viewpoint writing style puts readers in each character's mindset, and allows the story to flow smoothly. Readers see Claire, Jenny, Michael, and others not from Jack's perspective. This bestseller-bound psychological/legal thriller causes readers to question social issues, and for me, poor choices that affected my life. The author "has a psychological grasp of people that [gives] her an edge." At times, she waxes philosophical with zingers like, "Time is less precious to those who have more of it."

Disgusted by these characters *contains spoilers*

I hate to write this review because I did not like this book. I read the first book and gave it 2 stars. It was a painful read, but I made it through. I hated Jack and his mistress Jenny in the first book, BUT he did continue to say that he loved his wife and he was sorry and in the end they tried to work it out. They got back together. That is why I gave the first book 2 stars instead of 1. It was a painful story but the book felt complete to me in the end.

Keep No Secrets had me disgusted, and the characters didn't touch me. I did not like the characters at all.I read another review that took the words out of my mouth. How can this author give us an HEA in the first book and take it away in this one. WTF!!! Well, it was sort of an HEA. I stopped reading when I figured out some things so I skipped to the end and dammit, I was right. I wanted to throw up all over my bed. I absolutely hated the main character and his mistress. Everything that he did made me sick. He was so stupid and full of lust. If this is the way the male brain works, I do not want to allow my husband to ever leave the house again.

The second book seemed to be a contradiction to the first.All of a sudden his wife is the bad one. When in the first book we cried with her and felt her pain when she found out about his affair. That part was the most emotional part of this entire story. I could feel her pain. It made no sense. I do not care what his wife did. If she would have let Jenny die in prison - so be it. All of this was Jack and Jenny's fault.

The author wants us to believe that Jack is an honorable man, but in my mind he is anything but. Ms Compton didn't do a good job of making me believe Jack was a good person. I felt like he was selfish and out for himself through out the book. I mean obviously, he sacrificed his family for his mistress. I was hoping that he would be convicted of the rape even though he didn't do it. I couldn't believe I was feeling that way. I wanted to see him suffer for what he did to his family. Everything is his fault but he came out clean and happy in the end. I hated that, thus, i did not like this book. Cheating is a hard limit for me. I am a married woman and this book upset me greatly. I know there are people out there like this, but I do not want to read about them and I do not want to be friends with them if I can help it - sorry.

If you like books about dumb cheating men and mistresses, this is the book for you. I wish I had not purchased this book. I deleted from my Kindle. I wonder if amazon will let me return it? I'm gonna give it a try. I will not purchase this author again.

Are you kidding me?"???

I'm a person that rarely gives reviews, but I wanted to warn everyone before they spend their money on this book. I was hoping in this book that Jack would really find a conscience. Well, I was wrong!!!!! What made it even worse is that the author made out the wife to be a bad person. Are you kidding me! What was this author thinking? Also, when the author has the wife saying that "she didn't think that adultery was evil." Do what? Jack's adultery destroyed that entire family, I would classify that as evil. Jack was a selfish jerk, but the author tried to make him look like a guy that just couldn't help himself and that was okay. Well, that wasn't okay. Reading has been a hobby of mine since I was a child. I read several books a week. After I read this book, I felt sick to my stomach. I have never had such a sick feeling after I read a book as I did with this one. I know not all books end with a HEA ending but, I don't think they should end where it makes you think that there is something so wrong in this world that people would actually give this book 5 stars with how the author portrayed the characters. If you love adulterers and think there's nothing wrong with it, then by all means go ahead and read this book. However, if you have any ounce of decency in your life and even an ounce of a moral code, then buyer beware!

About the Author
Hans Fallada was one of the best-known German writers of the twentieth century. Born in 1893 in Greifswald as Rudolf Wilhelm Adolf Ditzen, he took his pen name from a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. His most famous works include the novels Little Man, What Now? and The Drinker. Fallada died from an overdose of morphine on 5 February 1947 in Berlin. Michael Hofmann is the author of several books of poems and a book of criticism, Behind the Lines, and the translator of many modern and contemporary authors. Penguin publish his translations of Kafka's Metamorphosis and Other Stories and Irmgard Keun's Child of All Nations.

A true modern classic set in Wartime Germany. Quite brilliant

Staggeringly written in 24 days and first published in German in 1947, Alone in Berlin is without doubt a modern classic. Inspired by the real-life activities of Elsie and Otto Hampel, the heart of the book relates the plight of two, decent, hard working Germans living in Berlin, who, on hearing of the death of their only son on the front line, begin a small scale campaign of anonymous postcards attacking Hitler and the Nazi regime throughout Berlin. The scale of the effort may be small, but the price to be paid for discovery is almost certain death.

But Alone in Berlin is much more than this story of the Otto's postcard campaign and the attempts of the Gestapo to discover his identity. There are a whole host of people to whom we are introduced, and Fallada poignantly portrays their plights in touching detail. This would be a terrific novel in any hands, but when you consider that Fallada remained in Germany throughout the war (unlike so many other writers) you realise how true to life some of these fictional events must have been.

The new translation by Michael Hofmann is totally convincing - with only the very occasional word that seems to jar, but with subtle changes of tense and styles, he ensures that the story is fast paced and gripping throughout.

Ir's very much in the `classic' style - I was particularly reminded of some of the great Russian classic novels in terms of style. It's a compelling read and takes you through a range of emotions - from uplifting one minute, to despair another. But it's about people holding onto their beliefs and values in the face of every opposition possible.

This edition also has an afterword about the author and copies of some of the original wartime documents from the original Hampel case. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you enjoy classic fiction, this is a `must read'.

Dark, satirical war-time thriller

Hans Fallada was the nom de plume of one Rudolf Ditzen, a German novelist whose best known work is probably the Great Depression novel, "Little Man, What Now?", written in 1932 which in its day was a great international success, even leading to a Universal Pictures film adaptation in 1934. Jeder stirbt für sich allein ("Alone in Berlin" also published in the USA as "Every Man Dies Alone") was Fallada's final novel, extraordinarily written in just 24 days in October and November 1946, being completed but not published by the time of the author's death in February 1947. The book takes as its basis the true war-time story of Otto and Elise Hampel who over a period of three years baffled both the Police and the Gestapo by distributing hundreds of postcards all over Berlin, urging acts of civil disobedience and work-place sabotage. Despite the ineffectiveness of their propaganda campaign -- all but a few of their cards were handed into the authorities within hours -- the couple nevertheless enraged the Gestapo, who became convinced that the cards were the work of a large and well-orchestrated underground conspiracy, rather than just two people working silently and alone.

Having himself lived through the privations of the Nazi years and suffered their strictures at first hand (particularly as he was not exactly in favour with the Party) Fallada writes with a great incisiveness and authority, not only in his portrayal of officials of the state but also in his depiction of the behaviour of everyday people. "Alone in Berlin" is in part satirical and in part invective but is never less than a highly humanist examination of the times, as well as an honest and frank exploration of the depths to which many Germans had to lower themselves simply in order to survive. Fallada portrays the Nazi Party bigotry and corruption as absolute, permitting not the smallest spark of human decency to remain unpunished. He points up the way in which those few who daily struggled to maintain even a semblance of humanity were left feeling so very much alone and isolated; a state in which they perforce maintained themselves or else perpetually risked denouncement, to be followed inevitably by interrogation, incarceration and possibly execution. And yet isolated pockets of human decency did abound, albeit working in small and quiet ways to try to derail the Fascist hegemony, however futile and dangerous their gestures might actually be.

"Alone in Berlin" is a compelling and totally gripping tale, initially of suspense and later of self-discovery and redemption. Fallada portrays at length the mean and petty lives which the Nazi political system created, as well as the hopelessness experienced by many in war-time Berlin; the author fair revels in the crass incompetences and internal bickerings of the authorities which for so long kept them from tracking down the conspirators. Many of the small details of the book are partly auto-biographical -- particularly many of the internal struggles of its weaker characters, as well as their experiences at the hands of low-level Party officials and rank-and-file fanaticism -- mirroring as they do Fallada's own personal experiences of those years. Many of the characters -- especially those in positions of power -- come across now more as caricatures or as comic cartoon characters more than as real, solid people but this was probably the way they appeared within an entire nation which had collectively been forced to bury not just its sanity but a great portion of its humanity as well.

This English translation is newly prepared by Michael Hofmann and is a joy to read, capturing in highly idiomatic (contemporary) language Fallada's deadpan delivery of events, whether they be of great brutality or simpering banality. Above all, it comes across as fresh and vibrant, accentuating Fallada's wicked black humour perfectly.

About the Author
Bob Wood received a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from University of Colorado in 1949, a Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell in 1953, worked for General Electric Aeronautics and Ordnance, served in the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground for two years, and then completed 43 years with Douglas Aircraft and its successors. A long-time Director of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), a Councilor for the Society for Scientific Exploration, and member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics since 1947, he has garnered a reputation for integrity and scholarship in this field over the last two decades. His aerospace career included the thermodynamics of keeping missiles cool; managing and selling the independent research and development projects of a couple of dozen scientists and engineers; designing radars to discriminate between Soviet ballistic missiles and their decoys; applying advanced technology to make the Space Station cheaper, better, and sooner; and finally helping to sell the Delta launch vehicle as the workhorse for NASA orbital payloads. In the late 1960s, he ran a proprietary project to try to discover how UFOs “worked,” and has been studying the UFO topic ever since. Upon retirement, he became involved in the forensics of authenticating questioned “leaked” UFO documents, collaborating occasionally with his colleague and son Ryan (author of MAJIC – Eyes Only). He recognized the excellence of Nick Redfern’s attention to high standards and asked him to provide his international reports concerning aliens and viruses.

Fascinating page-turner

Bob Wood is part of the father-and-son team devoted to analyzing the purported "MJ-12" documents that have been fed to UFO researchers since the early '80s. This book gives a good overview to that material, while focusing on one overarching topic of interest: biowarfare and the threat of a potentially species-killing virus. Wood and his ghost-writer Nick Redfern tackle the subject from all angles: references in the MJ-12 documents, testimony from military and intelligence sources, and the mainstream historical and scientific record. What crops up over and over again are links between alleged MJ-12-connected individuals, research into biological warfare, astrobiology, and connections to alleged UFO crash/recoveries.

Wood and Redfern look at several documents from the Timothy Cooper collection, tackle the problem of document authentication, highlight several individual crash incidents, the cattle mutilation phenomenon, and the mysterious deaths of dozens of microbiologists and experts in biowarfare in the early 2000s. While I don't necessarily agree with all of the authors' conclusions (e.g., the overall authenticity of the documents, Redfern's ideas on Roswell, or the idea that cattle mutilations are essentially biowarfare experiments), most conclusions are stated more as tentative working hypotheses than as pet theories. The main virtue of the book, in my opinion, is the sheer collection of data: names, places, connections. And I have to hand it to Nick Redfern. I did not like his style in his Men In Black book, but his prose here is more journalistic, to-the-point, and it makes for an informative and page-turning read.

While the material is controversial, the sheer number of connections inclines me to think that there is something real here. Whether the real danger is from space-borne pathogens (e.g., brought to earth via comets or asteroids), so-called alien viruses found on the alleged bodies of UFO inhabitants, or engineered biowarfare agents (the source of which may or may not have something to do with the other options), the intel community has been keeping tabs on it since at least World War II. Any of the three scenarios is scary enough. Despite its scary subject matter, Alien Viruses (****1/4) is damn fun to read.

Good Read

Interesting premise, I would suggest that this book is more suitable for someone who has a strong background in this subject. Unlike books like Above Top secret, or Alien agenda, that give a history of the UFO topic, this book is an interesting addendum for someone familiar with the MJ-12 controversy and the history of sightings, mutilations, etc., over the last 70 odd years.

An immensely important book!

This is one of the most tremendously significant works ever published in the field of UFO studies, which has a huge literature. I have been involved myself for many years in this field, and have increasingly come to think that the (micro-)biological aspects of this whole question have too long been under-represented or even ignored. (I have been pointing out, for example, that the Roswell bodies must certainly have been DNA-harvested and gene-sequenced by now.) The issue of micro-organisms from off the earth is one that up to now has entered very little into discussions of matters like the UFO crash and retrieval of non-terrestrial bodies at Roswell, New Mexico (July 1947). Our immune systems evolve, and organisms from outside the system in which they evolved must for safety's sake be assumed to have a potentially great impact on the health-states of humans and other terrestrial organisms. The manner in which this volume explores that huge issue is a pleasure to behold. This centrally important volume belongs on everyone's shelf.

You cannot fault Spingola for the breadth of her historical knowledge.. I suspect she inherited no small amount of her cynicism and outlook from her association with Smedley Butler... and who would be in a better position to know the facts, and actually talk about it?
It's not an easy read, but definitely worth it.

NUREMBERG FIASCO EXPOSED

Another comprehensive expose of secret society activity in America and the world. The book is especially commendable for its analysis of the infamous Nuremberg Trials. This fiasco of justice is competently dealt with in this book, and for that reason alone the book is highly recommended.

I also recommend the other two volumes of this Ruling Elite series.
